Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and look, the redeemer Boaz had spoken of was passing by. He said, Turn aside and sit down here, so-and-so. And he turned aside and sat down.
He took ten men from the elder of the city and said, Sit here; and they sat.
Then he said to the redeemer, Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab, is selling the part of the field that belonged to our relative Elimelech.
So I thought I would reveal this to you and say, Buy it before those sitting here and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if he will not redeem it, tell me, so that I may know; for there is no one except you to redeem, and I come after you. He said, I will redeem it.
Boaz said, On the day you acquire the field from Naomi, you acquire it also from Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the dead man, in order to raise up the dead man's name over his inheritance.
The redeemer said, I cannot redeem it for myself, or else I would ruin my own inheritance. You redeem for yourself what is mine to redeem, for I cannot redeem it.
Now this was the way, in former times in Israel, concerning redemption and exchange, to make every word stand: a man drew off his sandal and gave it to his fellow. This was the form of attestation in Israel.
The redeemer said to Boaz, Acquire to you; and he drew his sandal.
Boaz said to the elder and all the people, Witnesses you today, that I acquired all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Kilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi.
I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, to be my wife, to raise up the dead man's name over his inheritance, so that the dead man's name will not be cut off from among his kin or from the gate of his hometown. You are witnesses today.
Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and like Leah, the two who built the house of Israel. Show your worth in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem.
And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring that Yahweh will give you from this young woman.
Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went to her; and Yahweh gave to her conception, and she bore a son.
Then the women said to Naomi, Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you without a redeemer today! May his name be proclaimed in Israel.
He will be one who restores your life and will sustain you in your old age, for your daughter-in-law has borne him; she loved you, and she is better to you than seven sons.
Then Naomi took the child, laid him in her bosom, and became his nurse.
The neighbors called to him a name, saying, A son was born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
And these are the accounts of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron.
And Hezron fathered Ram, and Ram fathered Amminadab.
And Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmah.
And Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed.
And Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
