I speak the truth in the Anointed One, I am not lying, while my conscience is bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit,
that great grief is to me and unceasing sorrow in my heart.
For I myself was wishing to be a curse, separated from the Anointed One for my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh;
who are Israelites, whose is the divine adoption as sons and the glory and the covenants and the lawgiving and the service and the promises,
whose are the patriarchs, and from whom is the Anointed One according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever, Amen.
But it is not as that the word of God has failed. For not all who are of Israel, these are Israel;
nor because they are seed of Abraham are they all children, rather: In Isaac will offspring be named to you.
That is, not the children of the flesh, these are the children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as offspring.
For the word of the promise is this: At this appointed-time I will come, and there will be a son to Sarah.
And not only so, but also Rebecca, having conception by one, Isaac our father;
for, not yet having been born nor having done anything good or evil, so that the purpose of God according to election may stand,
not of works but of the One calling, it was said to her: The older will serve the younger;
even as it has been written: Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.
What then will we say? Is there injustice with God? Never would it be!
For to Moses He says: I will show mercy to whom I may show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I may have compassion.
So then it is not of the one who is willing nor of the one who is running, but of God who is showing mercy.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: For this very thing I have raised you up, so that I may show my power in you, and that my name may be declared in all the land.
So then He shows mercy to whom He wants, and whom He wants He hardens.
You will say to me then: Why does He still find fault? For who has been resisting His purpose?
O man, but rather, who are you yourself who is answering against God? Will the thing formed not say to the One who formed it: Why did you make me like this?
Or has the potter not authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel indeed unto honor and one however unto dishonor?
Now what if God, desiring to show the wrath and to make known His power, bore with much patience the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,
also that He may make known the riches of His glory upon the vessels of compassion, which He prepared beforehand for glory?
even us, whom He has called, not only out from the Jews but also out from the nations,
as also in Hosea He says: I will call that which is not my people my people, and her who is not loved.
And it will happen that in the place where it was said to them: You yourselves are not my people, there they will be called sons of the living God.
Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: Though the number of the sons of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, only the vestige will be saved;
for the Lord, concluding the sentence and bringing it swiftly in righteousness, will perform the word brought swiftly upon the land.
And even as Isaiah has foretold: unless the Lord of Hosts had left us descendants, we should have become like Sodom and would have been made like Gomorrah.
What then will we say? That the nations, not pursuing righteousness, have grasped righteousness, the righteousness that is by trust;
but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain to that law of righteousness.
Because of why? Because it was not by trust but as by works of law; for they stumbled over the stone of stumbling,
even as it has been written: Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and everyone who is trusting on Him will never be put to shame.
