And the fifth messenger sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star out of the sky having fallen to the earth, and to it was given the key of the pit of the abyss.
And he opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.
And out of the smoke locusts came forth unto the land, and to them was given power, like the scorpions of the land have power.
And it was said to them that they will not harm the grass of the land nor any green thing nor any tree, except only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
And it was granted to them that they may not kill them, but that they will torment them five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it may strike a man.
And in those days the men will seek death and certainly no more will find it; and they will long to die, and death flees from them.
And the appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle, and upon their heads were something like wreaths like gold, and their faces like the faces of men.
And they had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like those of lions.
And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses rushing into battle.
And they have tails like scorpions, and stingers it was, and in their tails is their power they have to injure the men for five months.
And they have over them a king, the messenger of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek the name he has is Apollyon.
The first woe has passed; behold, after these things two woes are still coming.
And the sixth messenger sounded his trumpet, and I heard one voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God,
saying to the sixth messenger, the one who has the trumpet: Release the four messengers who are bound at the great river Euphrates.
And the four messengers who prepared for the hour and for the day and month and year were released, so that they may kill a third of mankind.
And the number of the armies of the cavalry was twice ten thousand ten thousands; and I heard their number.
And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and those sitting on them having fiery and hyacinthine and brimstone breastplates; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone.
By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and from the smoke and from the brimstone which is proceeding out of their mouths.
For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents having heads, and with them they injure.
And the rest of the men who not were killed by these plagues not even repented of the works of their hands, so that they will not worship the demons and the golden idols and the silver and the bronze and the stone and the wooden, which neither are able to see nor to hear nor to walk;
and they did not repent of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their sexual immorality nor of their thefts.
