A poem of Ethan the Ezrachite.
The loyal love of Yahweh I will sing forever; to generation after generation I will make known your steadiness with my mouth.
For I said, Loyal love will be built forever; the skies, you establish your steadiness in them.
I cut a covenant for my chosen one; I swore an oath to David my slave.
Forever I will establish your seed, and I will build your throne for generation after generation. Selah
The skies praise your wonder, Yahweh, and also your steadiness in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the clouds can compare to Yahweh, who is like Yahweh among the sons of the gods?
God is dreaded in the council of the holy ones, great and to be feared above all around him.
Yahweh, God of hosts, who is like you, mighty Yah? Your steadiness is all around you.
You rule over the rising of the sea; when its waves lift themselves up, you still them.
You crushed Rahab like one slain; with the arm of your strength, you scattered your enemies.
Yours are the skies; yours too is the land; the world and its fullness, you founded them.
North and south, you created them; Tabor and Hermon ring out for joy at your name.
Yours is an arm with might; your hand is strong, your right hand is high.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; loyal love and stability go before your face.
Blessed are the people who know the shout, Yahweh; in the light of your face they walk.
In your name they rejoice all the day, and in your righteousness they rise high.
For you are the splendor of their strength, and by your favor our horn rises high.
For our shield belongs to Yahweh, and our king to the holy one of Israel.
Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones, and you said, I have set help upon a warrior; I have lifted on high one chosen from the people.
I have found David my slave; with the oil of my holiness I have anointed him.
With whom my hand will be established; my arm also will strengthen him.
An enemy will not beguile him, and a son of injustice will not afflict him.
And I will crush his enemies from before his face, and strike down those who hate him.
And my steadiness and my loyal love are with him, and in my name his horn will be raised high.
And I will set his hand on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.
He will call out to me, You are my father, my God, and the rock of my deliverance.
I also will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the land.
Forever I will keep my loyal love for him, and my covenant will be reliable for him.
I will set his seed forever, and his throne like the days of the skies.
If his sons forsake my instruction and do not walk in my justice;
if they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments;
then I will punish their transgression with a rod, and their guilt with blows.
But my loyal love I will not break off from him, and I will not deal falsely in my steadiness.
I will not profane my covenant, and what comes out of my lips I will not change.
Once I swore by my holiness: I will not lie to David.
His seed will be forever, and his throne like the sun before me.
Like the moon it will be established forever, and the witness in the clouds is reliable. Selah.
But you, you spurned and rejected; you passed beyond bounds with your anointed.
You renounced the covenant of your slave; you profaned his crown to the land.
You burst through all his walls; you made his strongholds a ruin.
All who pass along the road plundered him; he has become a reproach to his neighbors.
You lifted high the right hand of his opponents; you made all his enemies rejoice.
You also turn back the edge of his sword, and you did not make him stand in battle.
You made his brightness cease and hurled his throne to the land.
You cut short the days of his youth; you wrapped shame around him. Selah.
How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your anger burn like fire?
Remember what my lifespan is; for what emptiness have you created all the children of humankind?
Who is the man who will live and not see death, who will deliver his being from the hand of Sheol. Selah.
Where is your former loyal love, Lord, which you swore to David in your steadiness?
Remember, Lord, the reproach of your slaves, my bearing in my bosom all the many peoples,
which your enemies reproached, Yahweh, which they reproached the heels of your anointed.
Blessed be Yahweh forever. Amen and amen.
