Psalms79

A psalm of Asaph.

O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have made your holy temple unclean; they have turned Jerusalem into heaps of ruins.

They have set the corpses of your slaves as food to the birds of the skies, the flesh of your faithful to the animals of the land.

They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury them.

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.

How long, Yahweh? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire?

Pour out your burning anger on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call on your name.

For he has devoured Jacob, and they have laid waste his dwelling.

Do not remember against us the guilts of former ones; let your compassions quickly come to meet us, for we have been brought very low.

Help us, O God of our salvation, on account of the word of the weightiness of your name; and deliver us, and cover over our sins for the sake of your name.

Why should the nations say, Where is their God? Let the vengeance for the blood of your slaves that was poured out be known among the nations before our eyes.

Let the groaning of the prisoner come before your face; according to the greatness of your arm, preserve those doomed to death.

And repay our neighbors sevenfold, into their bosom, their reproach with which they reproached you, O Lord.

And we, your people and the flock of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; generation after generation we will recount your praise.
