Psalms40

To the choirmaster, a psalm of David.

I waited and waited for Yahweh; he bent down to me and he heard my cry for help.

He brought me up from the pit of tumult, from the mud of the mire, and set my feet on a crag; he established my steps.

He put a new song in my mouth, praise for our God; many will see, and they will fear, and they will trust in Yahweh.

Blessed is the man who has put his security in Yahweh, and has not turned to the proud or those who fall away to a lie.

Many things you have done, Yahweh my God—your wonders and your plans toward us; there is none to compare with you. I would tell and speak of them, but they are too many to recount.

Sacrifice and grain offering you did not take delight in; ears you have dug out for me; burnt offering and sin offering you did not ask for.

Then I said, Here, I have come; in the scroll of the record it is written about me.

To do your pleasure, my God, I took delight, and your instruction is in the middle of my inward parts.

I bore news of righteousness in the great company; look, I do not restrain my lips, Yahweh, you know.

Your righteousness I did not cover in the middle of my heart; your steadiness and your deliverance I spoke of; I did not hide your loyal love and your stability from the great company.

You, Yahweh, will not withhold your compassion from me; your loyal love and your stability will always keep me.

For evils have surrounded me without number; my guilt has overtaken me, and I am not able to see; they are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me.

Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me; Yahweh, hasten to my help.

May they be ashamed and abashed together, those who seek my being to sweep it away; may they be turned back, backward, and humiliated, those who delight in my evil.

May they be appalled on account of their shame, those who say to me, Aha, aha!

May all who seek you exult and rejoice in you; may those who love your deliverance say continually, May Yahweh become great!

As for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord reckon on my behalf. You are my help and my rescuer; my God, do not delay.
