To the choirmaster. Of the slave of Yahweh, of David, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song on the day Yahweh delivered him from the palm of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: I have compassion for you, Yahweh, my strength.
Yahweh is my crag and my stronghold and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my rescue, my secure height.
I call out to Yahweh, the one to be praised, and from my enemies I am saved.
The ropes of death surrounded me, and torrents of ruin terrified me.
The ropes of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death met me.
In my distress I called to Yahweh, and to my God I cried for help; from his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help came before him, into his ears.
The land shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains trembled and rocked back and forth, for he blazed with anger.
Smoke went up in his nostril, and fire from his mouth devoured; coals burned from him.
He bent the skies and came down, with a thick dark cloud under his feet.
He rode on a cherub and flew; he swooped on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his hiding place, his shelter around him: the darkness of the waters, dense clouds of vapor.
From the brightness before him his dark clouds passed over, hail and coals of fire.
Yahweh thundered in the skies, and the Most High gave forth his sound—hail and coals of fire.
He sent out his arrows and scattered them; he shot lightning flashes and threw them into confusion.
Then the channels of the waters were seen, the foundations of the world were uncovered, from your rebuke, Yahweh, from the breath of the breath of your nostril.
He sent from the height and took hold of me; he drew me out of the great waters.
He rescued me from my fierce enemy and from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me.
They came to meet me in the day of my calamity, but Yahweh became my support.
He brought me out into a roomy place; he pulled me free, for he delighted in me.
Yahweh dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he paid me back.
For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and I have not wickedly left my God.
For all his justice was before me, and I did not put his statutes away from me.
I was blameless with him, and I kept myself from my guilt.
Yahweh paid me back according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.
With the faithful you show yourself faithful; with a blameless man you show yourself whole.
With one who purifies himself you show yourself pure; with the twisted you show yourself twisted.
For you save a poor people, but high eyes you bring low.
For you cause my lamp to shine; Yahweh my God lights up my darkness.
For with you I rush at a raiding band, and with my God I leap over a wall.
God—his way is blameless; the word of Yahweh is refined; he is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
For who is a god apart from Yahweh, and who is a rock except our God?
The God who girds me with strength and has made my way blameless,
making my feet like does, and setting me to stand on my high places.
He teaches my hands for war, and my arms press down a bow of bronze.
You gave me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand sustains me, and your gentleness makes me great.
You make room for my step beneath me, and my ankles have not slipped.
I chase my enemies and overtake them, and I do not return until I have finished them.
I shatter them, and they cannot rise; they fall beneath my feet.
You girded me with strength for the battle; you bow down beneath me those who rose against me.
And my enemies, you gave me the back of their necks, and those who hate me, I put an end to them.
They cry for help, but there is no deliverer; to Yahweh, and he does not answer them.
And I grind them like dust on the face of the wind; like the mud of the streets I pour them out.
You deliver me from the strife of a people; you set me at the head of nations; a people I have not known serve me.
At the hearing of the ear they obey me; the sons of the foreigner cringe before me.
The sons of the foreigner wither, and they come trembling out of their strongholds.
Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock, and high be the God of my salvation.
The God who gives me vengeances, and subdues peoples beneath me,
who delivers me from my enemies; you also lift me high above those who rise against me; from the man of violence you rescue me.
Therefore I give thanks to you among the nations, Yahweh, and to your name I sing praises.
He makes great the deliverances of his king and does loyal love for his anointed, for David and for his seed forever.
