Obadiah1

The vision of Obadiah. Thus said the Adonai Yahweh to Edom: a report we heard from Yahweh, and a pain has been sent among the nations: Rise, and let us rise against her for war.

Behold, I have set you small among the nations; you are despised exceedingly.

The presumption of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the cleft of the crag, the height of his spot, who says in his heart, Who will bring down me land?

Though you taller as the eagle, and though between the stars you put your nest, from there I will bring down you, the utterance of Yahweh.

If thieves came to you, if devastators of the night, how you are ruined! Would they not steal only their more? If fortified ones came to you, would they not leave gleanings?

How Esau is ransacked, his hidden things ransacked!

To the boundary they have sent you, all the men of your covenant; the men of your wholeness have deceived you, able to you; the men of your food trap under you — there is no understanding in him.

Will I not in that day, the utterance of Yahweh, make the wise perish from Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau?

And your mighty men, O Teman, will be dismayed, for the sake that every man be cut from the mountain of Esau by the slaughter.

From the violence to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

In the day you stood from before, in the day foreigners took captive his wealth, and foreigner came into his gate and over Jerusalem cast a lot — you also were as one of them.

But do not see in the day of your brother, on the day of his misfortune, and do not rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their perishing, and do not make your mouth great in the day of distress.

Do not go in the gate of my people in the day of their disaster; do not see also you in his disaster in the day of his disaster; and do not send out against his wealth in the day of his disaster.

And do not stand over the crossroads to cut off his refugees, and do not close up his survivors in the day of distress.

For near is the day of Yahweh over all the nations; as you have made, it will be made to you; your deserving will return on your head.

For as you drank over the mountain of my holiness, all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and swallow down, and they will be as though they were not.

But in the mountain of Zion will be deliverance, and it will be holiness; and the house of Jacob will occupy their possessions.

And the house of Jacob will be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble; and they will pursue them hotly and eat them, and there will be no survivor to the house of Esau — for Yahweh has spoken.

And the Negev will occupy the mountain of Esau, and the Shephelah the Philistines; and they will occupy the field of Ephraim and the field of Samaria, and Benjamin the Gilead.

And the exile of this wall, of the children of Israel, who are the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exile of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad, will occupy the cities of the Negev.

And the saved will come up on the mountain of Zion to judge the mountain of Esau; and the kingdom will be to Yahweh.
