¹And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:

²Take vengeance for the children of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people.

³And Moses spoke to the people, saying: Arm men from among you for the host, so that they are upon Midian, to set the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.

⁴A thousand to the tribe, a thousand to the tribe, for all the tribes of Israel, you shall send out to the host.

⁵And there were assigned from the thousands of Israel, a thousand to each tribe, twelve thousand armed for the host.

⁶And Moses sent them, a thousand to the tribe, to the host, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the host, with the vessels of the holy place and the trumpets of the war shout in his hand.

⁷And they went to war against Midian, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

⁸And the kings of Midian they killed, in addition to their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and Balaam the son of Beor they killed with the sword.

⁹And the children of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their children, and all their cattle, and all their livestock, and all their wealth they plundered.

¹⁰And all their cities in their dwelling places, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.

¹¹And they took all the plunder, and all the spoil, among human beings and among livestock.

¹²And they brought the captives, the spoil, and the plunder to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp, to the plains of Moab, which are at the Jordan of Jericho.

¹³And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the chiefs of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.

¹⁴And Moses was angry at those appointed over the army, the captains of the thousands and the captains of the hundreds, who were coming from the host of the battle.

¹⁵And Moses said to them: Have you let every female live?

¹⁶Look, they were to the children of Israel, at the word of Balaam, a cause to commit unfaithfulness against Yahweh over the word of Peor; and the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.

¹⁷And now kill every male among the children, and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with a male.

¹⁸And all the children among the women who have not known lying with a male, keep alive for yourselves.

¹⁹And you, camp outside the camp seven days; everyone who has killed a being and everyone who has touched one slain: you shall purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

²⁰And every garment, and every article of skin, and every product of goat hair, and every article of wood, you shall purify.

²¹And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the host who had gone to the battle: This is the statute of the instruction that Yahweh commanded Moses.

²²Only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

²³Every word that can go into the fire, you shall make it pass through the fire, and it shall be pure; nevertheless it shall purify itself with the water of impurity; and all that cannot go into the fire, you shall make it pass through the water.

²⁴And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and you shall be pure; and afterward you may come into the camp.

²⁵And Yahweh said to Moses, saying:

²⁶Take the sum of the spoil of the captives, among human beings and among livestock, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers of the congregation;

²⁷And you shall divide the plunder between those who wield the war, who go out to the host, and between all the congregation.

²⁸And you shall raise a levy for Yahweh from among the men of the war who go out to the host: one being from five hundred, from the man, and from the cattle, and from the donkeys, and from the flock;

²⁹From their half you shall take it, and you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, the contribution of Yahweh.

³⁰And from the half of the children of Israel you shall take one seized out of the fifty, from the man, from the cattle, from the donkeys, and from the flock, from all the livestock; and you shall give them to the Levites who keep the duty of the dwelling place of Yahweh.

³¹And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses.

³²And there was the plunder, the remainder of the spoil that the people of the host had plundered: flock, six hundred thousand, and seventy thousand, and five thousand;

³³and cattle, two and seventy thousand;

³⁴and donkeys, one and sixty thousand;

³⁵and the being of humankind, from the women who had not known the bed of a male, every being, two and thirty thousand.

³⁶And there was the half, the portion of those who had gone out in the host: the number of the flock, three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, and seven thousand, and five hundred;

³⁷and there was the levy for Yahweh from the flock, six hundred, five and seventy;

³⁸and the cattle, six and thirty thousand, and their levy for Yahweh, two and seventy;

³⁹and donkeys, thirty thousand and five hundred, and their levy for Yahweh, one and sixty;

⁴⁰and the beings of humankind, sixteen thousand, and their levy for Yahweh, two and thirty beings.

⁴¹And Moses gave the levy of the contribution of Yahweh to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

⁴²And from the half of the children of Israel, which Moses had divided off from the men who had warred —

⁴³and there was the half of the congregation from the flock, three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred;

⁴⁴and cattle, six and thirty thousand;

⁴⁵and donkeys, thirty thousand and five hundred;

⁴⁶and the beings of humankind, sixteen thousand —

⁴⁷And Moses took from the half of the children of Israel the one seized out of the fifty, from the man and from the livestock, and gave them to the Levites who keep the duty of the dwelling place of Yahweh, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

⁴⁸And the appointed ones, who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of the thousands and the captains of the hundreds, drew near to Moses;

⁴⁹and they said to Moses: Your servants have taken up the head-count of the men of the war who are in our hand, and not one man is missing from us.

⁵⁰And we have brought near the present of Yahweh, each man what he found, articles of gold: an armlet and a bracelet, a signet-ring, an earring, and a jewel, to cover over our living beings before Yahweh.

⁵¹And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, every worked article.

⁵²And all the gold of the contribution that they offered up for Yahweh was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the captains of the thousands and from the captains of the hundreds.

⁵³The men of the host had plundered, each man for himself.

⁵⁴And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, and they brought it into the tent of meeting, a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh.
