Then the daughters of Zelophehad drew near, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh son of Joseph; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying:
Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the middle of the company of those who met together against Yahweh, in the company of Korah; but in his own sin he died, and he had no sons.
Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from the middle of his family, because he has no son? Give us a possession in the middle of the brothers of our father.
And Moses brought near their justice before the face of Yahweh.
And Yahweh said to Moses, saying:
The daughters of Zelophehad are speaking rightly; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance in the middle of the brothers of their father, and you shall pass over to them the inheritance of their father.
And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying: If a man dies and has no son, you shall pass over his inheritance to his daughter.
And if he has no daughter, you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
And if he has no brothers, you shall give his inheritance to the brothers of his father.
And if his father has no brothers, you shall give his inheritance to his blood relation, the one nearest to him in his family, and he shall take possession of it. And it shall be for the children of Israel a statute of justice, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
And Yahweh said to Moses: Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, and see the land that I have given to the children of Israel.
And when you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered.
As you rebelled against my mouth in the wilderness of Zin, in the dispute of the congregation, to set me apart in the waters before their eyes — they are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
And Moses spoke to Yahweh, saying:
Let Yahweh, the God of the breaths of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,
who shall go forth before their face, and who shall come in before their face, and who shall lead them forth, and who shall bring them in, so that the congregation of Yahweh will not be like a flock that has no shepherd.
And Yahweh said to Moses: Take for yourself Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom there is breath, and lay your hand on him.
And you shall set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation, and command him before their eyes.
And you shall put some of your authority on him, so that all the congregation of the children of Israel may hear.
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the justice of the Urim before Yahweh; at his mouth they shall go forth, and at his mouth they shall come in, he and all the children of Israel with him, and all the congregation.
And Moses did as Yahweh had commanded him; and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation.
And he laid his hands on him, and commanded him, as Yahweh had spoken by the hand of Moses.
