¹It happened after the plague, Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, to say:

²Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, every one in Israel who goes out to war.

³Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab, at the Jordan, by Jericho, saying:

⁴From twenty years old and upward, just as Yahweh commanded Moses and the children of Israel, those who came out from the land of Egypt.

⁵Reuben, the firstborn of Israel. The children of Reuben: Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

⁶of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

⁷These were the families of the Reubenites; and those mustered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

⁸And the children of Pallu: Eliab.

⁹And the children of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. That is the Dathan and Abiram, the ones summoned from the congregation, who struggled against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they struggled against Yahweh.

¹⁰And the land opened wide its mouth and swallowed them down, and Korah, when the congregation died, when the fire consumed two hundred fifty men; and they became a sign.

¹¹But the children of Korah did not die.

¹²The children of Simeon by their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jakin, the family of the Jakinites;

¹³of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.

¹⁴These were the families of the Simeonites: twenty-two thousand two hundred.

¹⁵The children of Gad by their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites;

¹⁶To Ozni, the family of the Oznites; to Eri, the family of the Erites;

¹⁷To Arod, the family of the Arodites; to Areli, the family of the Arelites.

¹⁸These were the families of the sons of Gad, by their mustered men: forty thousand and five hundred.

¹⁹The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

²⁰They were the sons of Judah by their families: to Shelah, the family of the Shelahites; to Perez, the family of the Perezites; to Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.

²¹The sons of Perez were: to Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; to Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

²²These were the families of Judah, by their mustered men: seventy-six thousand and five hundred.

²³The sons of Issachar by their families: Tola, the family of the Tolaites; to Puah, the family of the Punites;

²⁴to Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; to Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.

²⁵These were the families of Issachar, by their mustered men: sixty-four thousand and three hundred.

²⁶The sons of Zebulun by their families: to Sered, the family of the Sardites; to Elon, the family of the Elonites; to Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.

²⁷These were the families of the Zebulunites, by their mustered men: sixty thousand and five hundred.

²⁸The sons of Joseph by their families: Manasseh and Ephraim.

²⁹The sons of Manasseh: to Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir fathered Gilead; to Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.

³⁰These were the sons of Gilead: Iezer, the family of the Iezerites; to Helek, the family of the Helekites;

³¹and Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, the family of the Shechemites;

³²and Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.

³³Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

³⁴These were the families of Manasseh, and their mustered men: fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.

³⁵These were the sons of Ephraim by their families: to Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; to Beker, the family of the Bakrites; to Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.

³⁶And these were the sons of Shuthelah: to Eran, the family of the Eranites.

³⁷These were the families of the sons of Ephraim, by their mustered men: thirty-two thousand and five hundred. These were the sons of Joseph by their families.

³⁸The sons of Benjamin by their families: to Bela, the family of the Belaites; to Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; to Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites;

³⁹to Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites; to Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.

⁴⁰The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman; to Ard, the family of the Ardites; to Naaman, the family of the Naamanites.

⁴¹These were the sons of Benjamin by their families, and their mustered men: forty-five thousand and six hundred.

⁴²These were the sons of Dan by their families: to Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These were the families of Dan by their families.

⁴³All the families of the Shuhamites, by their mustered men: sixty-four thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴The sons of Asher by their families: to Imnah, the family of the Imnahites; to Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; to Beriah, the family of the Beriahites.

⁴⁵To the sons of Beriah: to Heber, the family of the Heberites; to Malkiel, the family of the Malkielites.

⁴⁶And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.

⁴⁷These are the families of the children of Asher, by those of them mustered: fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁸The children of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites;

⁴⁹of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

⁵⁰These are the families of Naphtali, by their families; and those of them mustered: forty-five thousand and four hundred.

⁵¹These are those mustered of the children of Israel: six hundred thousand, one thousand, seven hundred and thirty.

⁵²Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:

⁵³To these the land shall be divided as an inheritance, according to the number of names.

⁵⁴To the numerous you shall increase its inheritance, and to the few you shall lessen its inheritance; to each man, in line with those mustered of him, his inheritance shall be given.

⁵⁵Only by lot shall the land be divided; they shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.

⁵⁶According to the lot shall its inheritance be divided, between the numerous and the few.

⁵⁷And these are those mustered of the Levites by their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

⁵⁸These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. And Kohath fathered Amram.

⁵⁹And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam, their sister.

⁶⁰And born to Aaron were Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

⁶¹And Nadab and Abihu died when they brought near strange fire before the face of Yahweh.

⁶²And those mustered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not mustered in the middle of the children of Israel, since no inheritance was given to them in the middle of the children of Israel.

⁶³These are those mustered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who mustered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho.

⁶⁴And among these there was not a man of those mustered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had mustered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

⁶⁵For Yahweh had said of them, 'They shall surely die in the wilderness'; and not a man of them was left, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
