Numbers21

The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelled in the Negev, heard that Israel had come by the way of the Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took captives from them.

Israel vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said: If you will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will completely destroy their cities.

Yahweh listened to the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanites, and they completely destroyed them and their cities; and he called the name of the place Hormah.

They set out from Hor the mountain, along the road toward the Sea of Reeds, to go around the land of Edom; and the being of the people grew short on the road.

The people spoke against God and against Moses: Why did you bring us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food, and there is no water, and our being loathes the worthless food.

Yahweh sent the snakes, the burning ones among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

And the people came to Moses and said: We have sinned, for we have spoken against Yahweh and against you. Pray to Yahweh, and let him remove the snake from us. And Moses prayed on behalf of the people.

And Yahweh said to Moses: Make yourself a seraph, and put it on a banner; and it will be that everyone who is bitten, and sees it, will live.

And Moses made a snake of bronze and set it on the banner; and it was that if the snake bit a man, he looked to the snake of bronze and lived.

And the children of Israel set out and encamped at Oboth.

And they set out from Oboth and encamped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that lies before the face of Moab, from the rising of the sun.

From there they set out and encamped in the wadi of Zered.

From there they set out and encamped on the far side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness, which goes out from the boundary of the Amorite; for Arnon is the boundary of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite.

Therefore it is said in the record of the wars of Yahweh: Waheb in Suphah, and the wadis of Arnon.

And the slope of the wadis, which stretches to the dwelling place of Ar, and leans on the boundary of Moab.

And from there to Beer; that is the well of which Yahweh said to Moses: Gather the people, and I will give them water.

Then Israel sang this song: Come up, O well! Sing out to it!

The well that the officials dug, that the willing ones of the people bored, with a ruler's staff, with their staffs. And from the wilderness, Mattanah.

And from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

And from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, at the head of Pisgah, which looks down over the face of the wasteland.

And Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorite, saying:

Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into a field or a vineyard, and we will not drink the water of a well. We will go by the king's road until we have passed through your boundary.

But Sihon did not give Israel leave to pass through his boundary. And Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

And Israel struck it with the edge of the sword, and occupied his land from Arnon in Jabbok, in the children of Ammon; for fierce is the boundary of the children of Ammon.

And Israel took all these cities. And Israel dwelled in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon and in all her daughter villages.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorite; and he had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as Arnon.

Therefore those who speak in proverbs say: Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be built and established.

For a fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon; it ate Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon.

Woe to you, O Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has set his sons as refugees, and his daughters in captivity, to the king of the Amorite, Sihon.

And we shot them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. And we laid waste as far as Nophah, which reaches as far as Medeba.

And Israel dwelled in the land of the Amorite.

And Moses sent men to spy out Jazer; and they captured her daughter villages, and dispossessed the Amorite who was there.

And they turned and went up by the road to Bashan; and Og, king of Bashan went out to meet them, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei.

And Yahweh said to Moses: Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, along with all his people and his land; and you will do to him just as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorite, who dwelled in Heshbon.

And they struck down him, and his sons, and all his people, until no survivor was left to him; and they took possession of his land.
