1Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they went out from the land of Egypt, saying:
2Take the sum of the whole congregation of the children of Israel, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male, head by head.
3From twenty years old and upward, every one who goes out to war in Israel, you shall muster them by their companies, you and Aaron.
4And with you there will be one man for each tribe, a man who is head of the house of his fathers.
5And these are the names of the men who will stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
6for Shimon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
7for Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;
8for Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;
9for Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;
10for the children of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
11for Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;
12for Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;
13for Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;
14for Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;
15for Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.
16These were the ones called from the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.
17Moses and Aaron took these men, who had been designated by name.
18And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they declared their lineage by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head.
19As Yahweh commanded Moses, so he mustered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20And the children of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were: their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
21Their mustered men, for the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22Of the children of Shimon, their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, the ones mustered of it, by the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
23Their mustered men, for the tribe of Shimon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24Of the children of Gad, their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
25Their mustered men, for the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26Of the children of Judah, their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
27Their mustered men, for the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28Of the children of Issachar, their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
29Their mustered men, for the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30Of the children of Zebulun, their lines of descent, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war:
31Their mustered men, for the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32For the children of Joseph, for the children of Ephraim: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
33Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
34For the children of Manasseh: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
35Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Manasseh, were two and thirty thousand and two hundred.
36For the children of Benjamin: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
37Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Benjamin, were five and thirty thousand and four hundred.
38For the children of Dan: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
39Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Dan, were two and sixty thousand and seven hundred.
40For the children of Asher: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
41Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Asher, were one and forty thousand and five hundred.
42For the children of Naphtali: their accounts by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host:
43Those mustered of them, for the tribe of Naphtali, were three and fifty thousand and four hundred.
44These are the mustered ones whom Moses and Aaron mustered, together with the leaders of Israel. They were twelve men, each one for his fathers' house.
45And there were all those mustered of the children of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and up, everyone who goes out to the host in Israel;
46and all those mustered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
47But the Levites, by the tribe of their fathers, were not mustered in their midst.
48Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:
49Only the tribe of Levi you shall not muster, and their sum you shall not take in the midst of the children of Israel.
50But you, appoint the Levites over the dwelling of the testimony, and over all its articles, and over everything that belongs to it. They shall carry the dwelling and all its articles, and they shall serve it, and around the dwelling they shall encamp.
51And when the dwelling sets out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the dwelling camps, the Levites shall raise it up. And the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.
52And the children of Israel shall camp, each man by his camp, and each man by his standard, by their hosts.
53But the Levites shall camp around the dwelling of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the watch of the dwelling of the testimony.
54And the children of Israel did it; according to all that Yahweh had commanded Moses, so they did.
