Nahum1

The burden concerning Nineveh. The record of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

Yahweh is a jealous God and an avenger; Yahweh is an avenger, a lord of anger; Yahweh avenges his opponents, and he keeps it up against his enemies.

Yahweh is slow to anger and great in strength, and Yahweh will surely not leave unpunished. His way is in storm-wind and in storm, and the cloud is the dust of his feet.

He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and all the rivers he parches; Bashan and Carmel languish, and the blossom of Lebanon languishes.

The mountains shook because of him, and the hills melted; the land lifted up from his face, and the world, and all those who dwell in it.

Who can stand before his indignation, and who can rise up in the burning of his anger? His rage is poured out like fire, and the rocks are pulled down because of him.

Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of distress, and he knows those who take refuge in him.

And with a flood passing over he will make a complete end of her place, and darkness will pursue his enemies.

What are you reckoning against Yahweh? He is the one making a complete end; distress will not rise up twice.

For while they are tangled like thorns and drunk with their drink, they are eaten up like stubble, fully dry.

From you has gone out one who plots evil against Yahweh, a counselor of worthlessness.

Thus says Yahweh: Though they are complete and just so many, even so they will be cut off, and he will pass away. I afflicted you; I will not afflict you again.

And now I will break his yoke from upon you, and your fetters I will tear apart.

And Yahweh has commanded concerning you: No more will seed be sown from your name. From the house of your God I will cut off the idol and the molten image; I will make your grave, for you are of little account.

Look, on the mountains the feet of one who brings news, one who proclaims wholeness! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah; pay your vows. For the worthless one will never again pass through you; he is wholly cut off.
