Now beware that you do not do your righteousness before men in order to be seen by them; for then you have no wage with your Father who is in the heavens.
Therefore when you do acts of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the stage-actors do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Amen I say to you, they have their wage.
But when you do charity, your left hand should not know what your right hand is doing,
so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, the One who sees in secret, himself will reward you in the public.
And when you pray, you will not be like the stage-actors, for they cherish to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by men. Amen I say to you that they have their wage.
But you yourself, when you pray, enter into your room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, the One who sees in secret, will reward you in the public.
Now when praying, do not use vain repetitions like the pagans, for they think that in their many words they will be heard.
Therefore do not be like them, for God your Father has known what things you have need of before your asking Him.
Therefore pray you yourselves thus: our Father, you who are in the heavens, hallowed should be your name;
your kingdom should come; your will should be done, as in heaven so also upon the earth;
grant us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we ourselves also forgive our debtors;
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
For if you shall forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will forgive you also.
But unless you shall forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Now whenever you fast, do not be gloomy like the stage-actors, for they disfigure their appearance so that they may appear to men as fasting. Amen I say to you that they have their wage.
But you yourself, when fasting, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father, the One in secret. And your Father, the One who sees in secret, will reward you in the public.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures upon the land, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in nor steal;
for where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.
The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore if your eye shall be clear, your whole body will be full of light;
but if your eye shall be evil, all your body will be full of darkness. Then if the light that is within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
No one is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and money.
Because of this I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you may eat or what you may drink, nor about your body, what you may put on. Surely the life is more than food and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the skies, that they do not sow nor do they reap nor do they gather into barns — and your Heavenly Father feeds them; surely you yourselves are much more valuable than they?
Now who from among you, being anxious, is able to add one hour to his lifespan?
And about clothing, why are you anxious? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow; they do not labor nor do they spin.
But I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.
But if God thus clothes the grass of the field, being here today and tomorrow being thrown into the furnace, surely much more you, O you of little faith?
Therefore you shall not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? Or what shall we drink? Or what shall we wear?
For all these things the nations seek after; for your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Therefore you shall not be anxious about the things of tomorrow; for tomorrow will be anxious about itself. Sufficient to the day is its trouble.
