Then when morning had arrived, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so that they might put him to death.
And when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, the one who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, regretted it and turned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and to the elders,
saying, "I have sinned, having betrayed innocent blood." Then they said, "What is that to us? You yourself will see."
And when he had cast down the pieces of silver into the temple, he withdrew, and having gone away, he hanged himself.
And the chief priests, having taken the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood."
Then, when they had taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter for a burial place for the strangers.
Therefore that field was called the Field of Blood until this day.
Then was fulfilled that which had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the One priced, on whom they set a price by the sons of Israel,
and they gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord directed me."
And Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor questioned him, saying, "Are you yourself the King of the Jews?" And Jesus was saying to him, "You yourself say it."
And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he answered no thing.
Then Pilate says to him, "Do you not hear how many things they witness against you?"
And he did not answer him, not even one word, so as to amaze the governor exceedingly.
Now at the festival the governor had been accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they were wishing.
Now they were holding at that time a notable prisoner, being named Jesus Barabbas.
Therefore when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want that I may release to you? Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is named the Anointed One?"
For he knew that through envy they had delivered him up.
Now when he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Let there be nothing between you and that righteous man; for today I suffered many things in a dream because of him."
And the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they may ask for Barabbas, and may destroy Jesus.
Now the governor, answering, said to them, "Which of the two do you desire that I may release to you?" And they said, "Barabbas."
Pilate says to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called the Anointed One?" They all say to him, "He should be crucified."
And the governor was saying, "For what evil did he commit?" And they were crying out excessively, saying, "He should be crucified."
Now when Pilate saw that it availed no thing, but rather a riot is arising, he took water and washed his hands opposite the crowd, saying, "I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one; you yourselves will behold it."
And answering, all the people said, "His blood be on us and on our children."
Then he released Barabbas to them; and Jesus, when he had flogged him, he delivered him up that he may be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus with them to the Praetorium, gathered all the cohort before him,
and when they had stripped him, they put around him a scarlet robe,
and when they had twisted together a wreath of thorns, they put it on his head and a reed in his right hand, and when they had bowed the knees before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, the King of the Jews!"
And when they had spit upon him, they took the reed and were striking him on his head.
And when they had mocked him, they took off him the robe and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him.
Now going forth, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon; him they compelled that he may carry his cross.
And having come to a place being named Golgotha, which is named the Place of a Skull,
they gave him wine mingled with gall to drink, and having tasted it, he did not wish to drink it.
Now when they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, so that may be fulfilled which had been spoken by the prophet, "They divided my garments among themselves, and upon my clothing they cast lots."
And sitting down, they were guarding him there,
and they put up over his head his accusation, written, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."
At the same time two robbers are crucified with him, one at the right hand and one at the left.
Now those passing by were denigrating him, wagging their heads
and saying, "You who are destroying the temple and building it in three days, rescue yourself! If you are the Son of God, descend also from the cross!"
Now likewise also the chief priests, mocking with the scribes and elders and Pharisees, were saying,
"Others he saved; himself he is not able to rescue. If he is the King of Israel, he should descend now from the cross, and we will trust in him.
He has trusted on God; he should deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
And likewise even the robbers, those having been crucified with him, were upbraiding him.
Then from the sixth hour darkness was over all the land until the ninth hour.
Then about the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Eli, lema sabachthani?" That is, "My God, my God, so why have you forsaken me?"
Then some of those who had stood there, listening, were saying that this man calls Elijah.
And immediately one of them, having run and having taken a sponge, having filled it with vinegar and having put it on a reed, were giving him to drink.
And the rest were saying, "Wait! Let us see whether Elijah comes to rescue him then." Now another, having taken a spear, pierced his side, and water and blood went out.
And Jesus, having again cried in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn from top until bottom into two, and the land was shaken, and the rocks were split,
and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the holy ones having fallen asleep were raised,
and when they had gone forth out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
And the centurion and those with him keeping guard over Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were happening, feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was God's Son."
Now there were there many women looking on from afar off, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Now when evening had arrived, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus.
He, having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
And Joseph, having taken the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and placed it in his new tomb which he had cut in the rock, and when he had rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away.
Now there was Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
And on the next day, which is after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together before Pilate,
saying, "Sir, we have remembered how that deceiver said while living, 'After three days I arise.'
Therefore command the tomb to be secured until the third day, otherwise his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away and may say to the people, 'He is risen from the dead.' And the last deception will be worse than the first."
Now Pilate was saying to them, "You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how."
And having gone, they made the tomb secure, having sealed the stone with the guard.
