For the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a master of a house, who went out in the morning to hire workmen for his vineyard.
And when he had agreed with the workmen for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And when he had gone out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
and to those he said, "You yourselves go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you."
And they went. Again, when he had gone out about the sixth and the ninth hour, he did likewise.
About the eleventh hour, when he had gone out, he found others standing idle, and he says to them, "Why have you stood here idle all the day?"
They say to him, "Because no one has hired us." He says to them, "You yourselves go also into the vineyard, and what is right you will receive."
When evening had arrived, the master of the vineyard says to his foreman, "Call the workmen and pay them the wages, having begun from the last until the first."
And when those hired about the eleventh hour had come, they received each a denarius.
And when the first had come, they thought that they will receive more; but they also received each a denarius themselves.
Now when they had received it, they were grumbling against the master of the house,
saying, "These last worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat."
And answering to one of them he said, "Friend, I do not wrong you. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?
Take what is yours and go. I desire to give to this last as also to you.
Or is it not lawful for me to do what I want with that which is mine? Or is your eye envious because I myself am generous?"
Thus the last will be first and the first last; for many are called, few now chosen.
And Jesus, now soon to be going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on their own, and on the way he said to them,
"Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
and they will deliver him to the nations, to mock and to flog and to crucify; and on the third day he will rise again."
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from him.
And he said to her, "What do you desire?" She says to him, "Say that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right hand and one on your left hand, in your kingdom."
Now Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask for. Are you able to drink the cup which I myself am about to drink, and the immersion which I myself am immersed to be immersed?" They say to him, "We are able."
And he says to them, "Indeed my cup you will drink, and the immersion which I myself am immersed you will be immersed; but to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
And having heard this, the ten were indignant about the two brothers.
And Jesus, having called them to him, said, "You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and the great ones exercise authority over them.
Now it will not be thus among you; but whoever among you wishes to become great, he will be your servant,
and whoever among you wishes to be first, he will be your slave;
even as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."
And when they were going out from Jericho, a great crowd followed him.
And behold, two blind men sitting beside the road, having heard that Jesus is passing by, cried out, saying, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Jesus, Son of David!"
And the crowd rebuked them, that they may be silent. But all the more they cried out, saying, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"
And having stopped, Jesus called them and said, "What do you desire I may do unto you?"
They say to him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened."
Then Jesus, having been moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately the eyes received their sight, and they followed him.
