Now when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
saying: Where is the One having been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and are come to worship him.
When Herod the king had heard, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
And when he had gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring of them where the Anointed One is born.
And they said to him: In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you yourself, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will go forth One leading, who will shepherd my people Israel.
Then Herod, having secretly called the Magi, inquired of them exactly the time of the appearing star,
and when he had sent them to Bethlehem, he said: Having gone, search carefully for the Child, and when then you may have found him, bring word back to me, so that I myself also, having come, may worship him.
And when they had heard the king, they went away, and behold, the star which they saw in the east was going before them, until, when it had arrived, it stood over where the Child was.
Now when they had seen the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy,
and when they had come into the house, they saw the Child with Mary his mother, and when they had fallen down, they worshiped him, and when they had opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.
And when they had been divinely warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew into their country through another route.
Then when they were withdrawing, behold, a messenger of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying: Having arisen, take the Child and his mother and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to seek the Child, to destroy him.
And when he had arisen, he took the Child and his mother by night and withdrew into Egypt,
and he was remaining there until the death of Herod, so that it may be fulfilled that which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt I called my Son.
Then Herod, when he had seen that he had been outwitted by the Magi, was intensely enraged, and when he had sent forth, he killed all the boys that were in Bethlehem and in all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the Magi.
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and she was not willing to be comforted, because they are no more.
Now when Herod was dying, behold, a messenger of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
saying: Having arisen, take the Child and his mother and go into the land of Israel, for those who seek the life of the Child have died.
And when he had arisen, he took the Child and his mother and entered into the land of Israel.
Now when he had heard that Archelaus rules over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and when he had been divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew into the district of Galilee,
and when he had come, he dwelt in a city named Nazareth, so that it may be fulfilled that which was spoken through the prophets, that he will be called a Nazarene.
