And their whole multitude rose up and led Him to Pilate.
Then they began to accuse Him, saying, "This man we found misleading our nation and forbidding tribute to be given to Caesar, and declaring Himself to be an Anointed One, a king."
And Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are you yourself the King of the Jews?" And answering him, He was saying, "You yourself say it."
And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no thing guilty in this man."
But they were insisting, saying that He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, and He has begun from Galilee until here.
Now Pilate, having heard Galilee, asked whether the man is a Galilean,
and when he had learned that He is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent Him up to Herod, he himself also being in Jerusalem in those days.
And Herod, having seen Jesus, was glad exceedingly, for of a long time he was wishing to see Him, because he heard many things concerning Him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him.
Then he was questioning Him in many words, however He himself answered him no thing.
Now the chief priests and the scribes had been standing by, vehemently accusing Him.
Then Herod also, with his troops, having set Him at naught and having mocked Him and put splendid apparel on Him, sent Him back to Pilate.
Then both Herod and Pilate became friends with one another on that day, for formerly there was enmity between them.
Then Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
said to them, "You brought this man to me as misleading the people, and behold, I myself, having examined Him before you, found no thing in this man guilty of that accusation you are bringing against Him.
But not even did Herod, for he sent Him back to us. And behold, no thing worthy of death is done by Him.
Therefore, when I have chastised Him, I will release Him."
Now of necessity he had to release one to them according to the festival.
However, they all cried out together, saying, "Remove this man, and release Barabbas to us!"
who, on account of a certain insurrection having been made in the city and murder, was cast into the prison.
Therefore again Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus.
But they were crying out, saying, "Crucify Him!"
And a third time he said to them, "For what evil did this man commit? I find no thing worthy of death in Him. Therefore, when I have chastised Him, I will release Him."
But they were urgent with loud voices, asking for Him to be crucified, and their voices and those of the chief priests were prevailing.
And Pilate sentenced their demand to be done.
Then he released to them the one cast into the prison on account of insurrection and murder, whom they were asking for, and Jesus he delivered to their will.
And as they led Him away, having laid hold on a certain Simon from Cyrene, who is coming from the country, they put the cross upon him to carry behind Jesus.
Now a great multitude of the people were following Him, and of women who also were mourning and lamenting for Him.
Then Jesus, having turned to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
For behold, days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never did bear and the breasts that never did feed.'
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'
For if they do these things in the green tree, what may happen in the dry?"
Now also two other criminals were being led away with Him to be killed.
And when they came to the place which is being called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, the one on the right, and the other on the left.
And Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Then, dividing his garments, they cast lots.
And the people had stood beholding. Then the rulers also with them were deriding Him, saying, "Others He saved; let him rescue Himself, if this is the Anointed One of God, the Chosen One."
Then the soldiers also mocked Him, coming near and offering sour wine to Him,
and saying, "If you yourself are the King of the Jews, rescue Yourself!"
Now there was also an inscription written over Him, writings in Greek and in Latin and in Hebrew: "This is the King of the Jews."
Now one of those criminals having been hanged was denigrating Him, saying, "Surely you yourself are the Anointed One? Rescue Yourself and us!"
Now the other, answering, was rebuking him, speaking, "Do you yourself not even fear God, that you are under the same judgment?
And we ourselves indeed justly, for we are receiving what is worthy of what we did; however this man did no thing wrong."
And he was saying, "Jesus, Lord, remember me when You may come into your kingdom!"
And Jesus said to him, "Amen I say to you, today you will be with Me in the Paradise."
And it was now already about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour,
and the sun darkened. And then the veil of the temple was torn in the middle.
And Jesus, having called out in a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I myself commit my Spirit." Now when He had said this, He breathed His last.
Now when the centurion had seen that which had taken place, he was glorifying God, saying, "Certainly this man was righteous."
And all the crowds having come together to this spectacle, having seen the things that had taken place, were returning home, beating their own breasts.
Now all those who knew Him had stood from afar off, and also those women having followed Him from Galilee, beholding these things.
And behold, a man named Joseph, being also a Council member, a good and righteous man,
he had not consented to the counsel and to their deed; from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself also was waiting for the kingdom of God,
he, having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus.
And when he had taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in a rock, in which no one was not yet laid.
And it was the Day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was just beginning.
Then the women also, who were having come with Him from Galilee, having followed, saw the tomb and how his body was laid.
Then when they had returned, they prepared spices and anointing oils. And on the Sabbath indeed they rested according to the commandment.
