And it came to pass on one of those days, when he is teaching the people in the temple and evangelising, that the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,
and spoke, saying to him: tell us by what authority you do these things, or who is the one who gave to you this authority?
Now he answered and said to them: I myself also will ask you one thing, and tell me:
The immersion of John, was it from heaven or from men?
And they reasoned among themselves, saying that If we shall say: From heaven, he will say: why then did you not trust in him?
However if we shall say: From men, all the people will stone us; for they are persuaded John to be a prophet.
And they answered not to know from where.
And Jesus said to them: Neither do I myself tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
Then he began to speak this parable to the people: A certain man planted a vineyard and rented it to farmers and went abroad a long time.
And in the season he sent a slave to the farmers, that they will give to him from the fruit of the vineyard; but the farmers sent him away, having beaten him, empty-handed.
And he proceeded to send another slave; but when they had beaten and dishonored him, they sent him away empty-handed.
And he proceeded to send a third; then when they had wounded him also, they cast him out.
Then the master of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps when they had seen him, they will respect him.
Now having seen him, the farmers were reasoning among one another, saying: This is the heir; come, let us kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.
And when they had cast him forth outside the vineyard, they killed him. Therefore what will the master of the vineyard do to them?
He will come and he will destroy these farmers and will give the vineyard to others. Then when they had heard it, they said: Never would it be!
But when he had looked at them, he said: then what is this that is written: The stone which those building rejected, this has become into the head of the corner?
Everyone falling on that very stone will be broken; but on whomever it may fall, it will grind him into powder.
And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay the hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people; for they perceived that he was speaking this parable against them.
And when they had watched him, they sent spies feigning themselves to be righteous, that they may catch him in talk, in order to deliver him to the rule and to the authority of the governor.
And they questioned him, saying: Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and you do not show partiality, but you teach the way of God in truth.
Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar or not?
However when he had perceived their craftiness, he said to them: why do you test me?
Show me a denarius; of whom has it the image and inscription? And they said: Caesar's.
And he said to them: Therefore give back the things of Caesar to Caesar and the things of God to God.
And they were not able to catch him in his word before the people, and when they had marveled at his answer, they became silent.
Then when some of the Sadducees had approached, the ones denying a resurrection to be, they questioned him,
saying: Teacher, Moses wrote to us: if anyone's brother shall die having a wife, and he shall be childless, that his brother shall take the wife and shall raise up seed to his brother.
Therefore there were seven brothers; and the first, having taken a wife, died childless,
and the second took the wife, and this one died childless,
and the third took her likewise; then also the seven did not leave children and died.
Now finally, of all, the woman also died.
Therefore the woman in the resurrection, of which of them does she become wife? For the seven had her as wife.
And Jesus answered and said to them: The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,
however those having been considered worthy to obtain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage;
for neither are they able to die any more, for they are like the angels, and they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
For however the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he names the Lord God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jacob.
Now he is not God of the dead but of the living; for all live to him.
Now answering, some of the scribes said: Teacher, well you have spoken.
Then no longer were they daring to ask him no thing.
Then he said to them: How do they declare the Anointed One to be David's Son,
and David himself says in the book of Psalms: the Lord said to my Lord; sit at my right hand,
until I place your enemies as a footstool of your feet.
Therefore David calls him Lord, and how is he his son?
Now when all the people are listening, he said to his disciples:
Beware of the scribes, who are desiring to walk in long robes and loving greetings in the marketplaces and first seats in the synagogues and first places in the banquets,
who devour the houses of widows and as a pretext pray at great length; these will receive more excessive condemnation.
