Joshua5

It happened, when all the kings of the Amorites who were across the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until they had crossed, that their heart melted, and no breath was in them any more before the face of the children of Israel.

At that time Yahweh said to Joshua: Make for yourself knives of rock, and turn back to circumcise the children of Israel a second time.

Joshua made himself knives of rock and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

And this is the word on why Joshua circumcised: all the people who had come out of Egypt, the males, all the men of war died in the wilderness on the way when they came out of Egypt.

For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but none of the people born in the wilderness on the way, when they came out of Egypt had been circumcised.

For forty years the children of Israel had walked in the wilderness, until the whole nation was finished, the men of war who had come out of Egypt, who did not listen to the voice of Yahweh; to whom Yahweh had sworn that he would not show them the land that Yahweh had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

And their sons, whom he raised up in their place, Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.

It happened, when all the nation had finished being circumcised, that they dwelled in their place in the camp until they revived.

Yahweh said to Joshua: Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. So he called the name of that place Gilgal, to this day.

The children of Israel camped at Gilgal and made the passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, on the plains of Jericho.

They ate from the produce of the land on the day after the passover: unleavened bread and roasted grain, on this very day.

The manna ceased on the next day, when they ate of the produce of the land; and manna was no longer for the children of Israel, but they ate from the harvest of the land of Canaan that year.

It happened, while Joshua was at Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and saw, and look, a man standing opposite him, his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him: Are you for us, or for our enemies?

He said: No; rather I am the captain of the host of Yahweh. Now I have come. Joshua fell on his face to the land and bowed down, and said to him: What is my lord saying to his servant?

The captain of the host of Yahweh said to Joshua: Take off your sandal from your foot, for the place on which you are standing is a holy place. Joshua did so.
