The lot came to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, so Gilead and Bashan belonged to him.
It belonged to the children of Manasseh who remained, by their families: to the children of Abiezer, and to the children of Helek, and to the children of Asriel, and to the children of Shechem, and to the children of Hepher, and to the children of Shemida. These were the children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the males, by their families.
Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh had no sons, but only daughters; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
They drew near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the chiefs, saying: Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance in the midst of our brothers; so he gave them, by the mouth of Yahweh, an inheritance in the midst of the brothers of their father.
And ten measured portions fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan.
For the daughters of Manasseh inherited an inheritance in the midst of his sons; and the land of Gilead belonged to the children of Manasseh who remained.
The boundary of Manasseh was from Asher to Micmethath, which is facing Shechem; the boundary went on to the right, to those who dwelled at En-tappuah.
The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah itself, at the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the children of Ephraim.
Then the boundary went down to the wadi of Kanah, southward to the wadi; these cities of Ephraim were in the midst of the cities of Manasseh; and the boundary of Manasseh was from the north of the wadi, and its far ends were at the sea.
Southward it was Ephraim's and northward Manasseh's; the sea was its boundary, and they touched Asher on the north and Issachar on the sunrise side.
There belonged to Manasseh, in Issachar and in Asher, Beth-shean and its daughter villages, Ibleam and its daughter villages, and those who dwelled in Dor and its daughter villages, those who dwelled at En-dor and its daughter villages, those who dwelled at Taanach and its daughter villages, and those who dwelled at Megiddo and its daughter villages: the three heights.
But the children of Manasseh could not take possession of these cities; and the Canaanite was determined to dwell in this land.
When the children of Israel grew strong, they set the Canaanite to forced labor, but they did not dispossess him at all.
The children of Joseph spoke with Joshua, saying: Why have you given me an inheritance of one lot and one measured portion, when I am a numerous people, since Yahweh has blessed me up to now?
Joshua said to them: If you are a numerous people, go up for yourself to the forest and cut it down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaites, since the hill country of Ephraim is narrow for you.
The children of Joseph said: The hill country will not be enough for us; and there are chariots of iron among all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley, both those in Beth-shean and its daughter villages and those in the valley of Jezreel.
Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying: You are a numerous people, and you have great strength; you will not have one lot only.
For the hill country will be yours; though it is forest, and you will cut it down; and its far ends will be yours; for you will dispossess the Canaanite, though he has iron chariots, and though he is strong.
