And these are what the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes divided out as an inheritance to them, to the children of Israel;
by the lot of their inheritance, as Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and half of the tribe.
For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and half of the tribe on the far side of the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance in their midst.
For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in and their pastures for their livestock and for their possessions.
As Yahweh had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
And the children of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: You know the word that Yahweh spoke to Moses the man of God on account of me and on account of you in Kadesh-barnea.
I was forty years old when Moses the slave of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh-barnea to scout out the land, and I brought back him a word just as it was in my heart.
And my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I followed fully after Yahweh my God.
And Moses swore on that day, saying: Surely the land on which your foot trod shall be for you an inheritance, and for your sons forever, because you followed fully after Yahweh my God.
And now, look, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, look, today I am eighty-five years old.
I am still strong today, as on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so is my strength now, for battle, for going out and for coming in.
And now give me this hill country that Yahweh spoke about on that day; for you heard on that day that Anakites were there, and great fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh is with me, and I will dispossess them, as Yahweh spoke.
And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.
So Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day, because he followed fully after Yahweh, God of Israel.
The name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba. He was the great man among the Anakites. And the land was quiet from war.
