Joshua10

And it happened, when Adoni-tsedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and put it under the ban, that just as he had done to Jericho and to its king, so he had done to Ai and to its king, and that those who dwelled in Gibeon had made friends with Israel and were in their midst,

And they were very afraid, for Gibeon was a great city, like one of the cities of the kingdom; indeed it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty men.

And Adoni-tsedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying:

Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon, for it has made friends with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

And they gathered, and the five kings of the Amorites went up: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, they and all their camps; and they encamped against Gibeon and fought against it.

And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying: Do not let your hands drop from your slaves; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us.

And Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

And Yahweh said to Joshua: Do not be afraid of them, for I have set them in your hand; not one man of them will stand before your face.

And Joshua came to them suddenly, having gone up all the night from Gilgal.

And Yahweh threw them into confusion before the face of Israel, and struck them down with a great blow at Gibeon, and ran after them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

And it happened, as they fled before the face of Israel, while they were on the descent of Beth-horon, that Yahweh threw great stones on them from the skies as far as Azekah, and they died. Many were those who died by the hailstones, more than those whom the people of Israel killed with the sword.

Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh on the day Yahweh set the Amorites before the face of the people of Israel, and he said before the eyes of Israel: Sun, be still at Gibeon; and moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

And the sun was still, and the moon stood, until the nation took vengeance on its enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? So the sun stood in the middle of the skies and did not hurry to go down for about a whole day.

There has been no day like that, before it, or after it, when Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh was fighting for Israel.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

And these five kings fled, and they hid themselves in the cavern at Makkedah.

And it was told to Joshua: The five kings have been found hidden in the cavern at Makkedah.

And Joshua said: Roll large stones against the mouth of the cavern, and set men over it to keep watch over them.

And you, do not stand still; run after your enemies and cut off their rear; do not let them enter their cities, for Yahweh your God has set them in your hand.

And it happened, when Joshua and the people of Israel had completed striking them with a very great blow, until they were consumed, that the survivors escaped from them and went into the walled cities.

And all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah in wholeness; no one sharpened his tongue against the people of Israel.

And Joshua said: Open wide the mouth of the cavern, and bring out to me these five kings from the cavern.

And they did so, and brought out to him these five kings from the cavern: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

And it happened, when they brought out these kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to every man of Israel, and said to the commanders of the men of war who had gone with him: Draw near; put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they drew near and put their feet on their necks.

And Joshua said to them: Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed; be strong and be bold, for thus Yahweh will do to all your enemies against whom you are fighting.

And Joshua struck them afterward and put them to death, and hung them on five trees; and they were hanging on the trees until the evening.

And it happened, at the time of the sun's going in, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cavern where they had hidden themselves there, and set large stones over the mouth of the cavern, until this very day.

And Joshua captured Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king; he devoted them to destruction, and every being who was in it; he did not leave a survivor. And he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.

And Yahweh also set it in the hand of Israel, and its king, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every being who was in it; he did not leave a survivor in it. And he did to its king just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it and fought against it.

And Yahweh set Lachish in the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every being who was in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

Then Horam, the king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he had left him no survivor.

And Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they encamped against it and fought against it.

And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every being who was in it on that day they devoted to destruction, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it.

And they captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and all its cities and every being who was in it; he did not leave a survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he devoted it to destruction, and every being who was in it.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it.

And he captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every being who was in it; he did not leave a survivor. As he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and to its king, and as he had done to Libnah and to its king.

Joshua struck all the land: the hill country, the Negev, the Shephelah, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivor, and he put every breathing thing under the ban, as Yahweh the God of Israel had commanded.

Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.

Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one stroke, for Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel.

Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
