The word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying:
"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out to it the proclamation that I am telling you."
Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a journey of three days.
Jonah began to go into the city, a journey of one day, and he proclaimed and said: "Yet forty days, and Nineveh will be overturned!"
The men of Nineveh believed in God. They proclaimed a fast and wore sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
He cried out and said, "In Nineveh, by decree of the king and his great ones: Let neither human nor livestock, neither cattle nor flock, taste anything. Let them not graze, and let them not drink water."
Let them cover themselves with sackcloth, human and livestock alike, and let them call out to God with strength. Let each one turn back from his way of evil and from the violence that is in his palms.
Who knows? God may turn and relent, and turn back from the burning of his anger, so that we do not perish.
God saw their deeds, that they had turned back from their way of evil. Then God relented concerning the harm that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
