And there was a day when the children of God came to take their stand beside Yahweh, and the adversary also came among them to take his stand beside Yahweh.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, From where do you come? And the adversary answered Yahweh and said, From roving about in the land and from walking about in it.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, Have you set your heart upon my servant Job? For there is none like him in the land, a man blameless and upright, a fearer of God, turning aside from evil; and he is still keeping hold of his integrity, though you incited me against him to swallow him down for nothing.
And the adversary answered Yahweh and said, Skin for skin; and all that belongs to a man he will give for his living being.
But please stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh; surely he will curse you to your face.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, Look, he is in your hand; only keep his living being.
And the adversary went out from beside the face of Yahweh and struck Job with a bad boil, from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
And he took a potsherd for himself to scrape himself with it, and he sat in the midst of the ashes.
And his wife said to him, Are you still keeping hold of your integrity? Curse God and die.
And he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would. Shall we also accept the good from God, and not accept the evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
And Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, and they came, each from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They met together by appointment to come and grieve with him and to comfort him.
And they lifted up their eyes from a distance and did not recognize him; they lifted up their voice and wept; and each tore his robe and tossed dust on their heads toward the skies.
And they sat with him on the land seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that the pain had become very great.
