There was a man in the land of Uz, Job was his name; and that man was blameless and upright, a fearer of God, turning aside from evil.
Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
His livestock was seven thousand sheep and goats, three thousand camels, five hundred pairs of cattle, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; and that man was greater than all the children of the east.
His sons would go and make a feast in the house of each one on his day; and they would send and call their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
It came about, when the days of the feast had gone round, that Job would send and set them apart; he would rise early in the morning and offer up burnt offerings by the number of them all. For Job said, Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their heart. Thus Job would do all the days.
And there was a day when the children of God came to take their stand beside Yahweh, and the adversary also came among them.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, From where do you come? And the adversary answered Yahweh and said, From roving about in the land and from walking about in it.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, Have you set your heart upon my servant Job? For there is none like him in the land, a man blameless and upright, a fearer of God, turning aside from evil.
And the adversary answered Yahweh and said, Is it for nothing that Job fears God?
Have you not put a hedge about him and about his house and about all that is his, all around? The work of his hands you have blessed, and his livestock has burst out in the land.
But please stretch out your hand and touch all that is his; surely he will curse you to your face.
And Yahweh said to the adversary, Look, all that is his is in your hand; only against him do not stretch out your hand. And the adversary went out from beside the face of Yahweh.
And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother.
And a messenger came to Job and said, The cattle were plowing, and the female donkeys were grazing at their side.
And Sheba fell and took them, and they struck down the servants with the edge of the sword; and only I alone slipped away to tell you.
This one was still speaking, and another came and said, The fire of God fell from the skies and burned among the flock and the servants, and devoured them; and only I alone slipped away to tell you.
This one was still speaking, and another came and said, The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels, and took them; and they struck down the servants with the edge of the sword; and only I alone slipped away to tell you.
While this one was speaking, another came and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother.
And look, a great wind came from across the wilderness and touched the four corners of the house, and it fell on the youths, and they died; and only I alone slipped away to tell you.
And Job rose and tore his robe and sheared his head, and he fell to the land and bowed down.
And he said, Naked I came out from the womb of my mother, and naked I will return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh took; may the name of Yahweh be blessed.
In all this Job did not sin, and he did not lay anything unseemly at God's door.
