After these things there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, a pool which is called in Hebrew Bethzatha, having five porches.
In these was lying a great multitude of those ailing — blind, lame, paralyzed — waiting for the motion of the water.
For a messenger on occasion was going down among those at the pool and was troubling the water; therefore the first climbing in after the disturbance of the water was becoming healthy of whatever disease he was possessed.
Now there was a certain man there, being thirty and eight years in the infirmity himself.
When Jesus had seen him lying, and had known that already a long time he has been so, he says to him, Do you desire to become well?
The one ailing answered him, Sir, I have not a man who, when the water may be stirred, may put me into the pool; now while I myself am going, another descends before me.
Jesus says to him, Arise, take up your mat and walk.
And immediately the man became well, and he took up his mat and was walking; now it was Sabbath on that very day.
Therefore the Jews were saying to the one healed, It is Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your mat.
However the man answered them, The One having made me well, that One said to me, Take up your mat and walk.
Therefore they asked him, Who is the man having said to you, Take up your mat and walk?
Now the one who had been healed did not know who it is; for Jesus moved away, a crowd being in the place.
After these things Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, Look, you have become well; sin no more, that something worse may not happen to you.
The man went away and told the Jews that it is Jesus, the One who made him well.
And because of this the Jews were persecuting Jesus and were seeking to kill him, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, My Father is working until now, and I myself am working.
Therefore because of this the Jews were the more seeking to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but also was naming his own Father God, making himself equal to God.
Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Amen I say to you, the Son is not able to do anything of himself, unless he shall see the Father doing it; for whatever he shall do, these things the Son also does likewise.
For the Father loves the Son and shows to him all things that he himself does, and greater works than these he will show to him, so that you yourselves may marvel.
For even as the Father raises up the dead and gives life, thus also the Son gives life to whom he wishes.
For the Father does not judge anyone, but has given all the judgment to the Son,
so that all may honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who is not honoring the Son is not honoring the Father, the One who sent him.
Amen I say to you that the one hearing my word and trusting in the One who sent me, he has eternal life and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
Amen I say to you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who heard will live.
For as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to the Son to have life in himself,
and he gave authority to him to carry out judgment, because he is Son of Man.
Marvel not at this, for an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice,
and will come forth — those having done good, to the resurrection of life, and those having done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
I myself am not able to do anything of myself; even as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my will but the will of the One who, having sent me, the Father.
If I myself shall bear witness concerning myself, my testimony is not true;
it is another who is bearing witness concerning me, and I know that true is the testimony which he bears witness concerning me.
You yourselves have sent unto John, and he has borne witness to the truth;
now I myself receive not the testimony from man, but I say these things that you yourselves may be saved.
He was the lamp which is burning and shining, now you yourselves were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.
However I myself have the testimony greater than that of John; for the works that the Father has given me, that I may complete them, the same works which I myself do, bear witness concerning me that the Father has sent me.
And the Father, the One who sent me, himself has borne witness concerning me; neither his voice have you heard at any time, nor his form have you seen,
and you have not his word abiding in you, for in him whom he sent, you yourselves do not trust.
You diligently search the Scriptures, for you yourselves think in them to have eternal life; and these are they bearing witness concerning me,
and you are not willing to come to me that you may have life.
Glory from men I take not;
but I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
I myself have come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.
How are you yourselves able to trust, receiving glory from one another, and the glory that is from the only God you seek not?
Think not that I myself will accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you, Moses, in whom you yourselves have hoped.
For if you were trusting in Moses, you would then be trusting in me; for he wrote concerning me.
Now if you trust not the things in his writings, how will you trust the things in my words?
