So at that time Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.
And the soldiers, having twisted together a wreath of thorns, put it on his head and cast a purple robe around him,
and they were coming up to him and were saying: Hail, O King of the Jews! And they were giving him blows with the palm.
And so Pilate went forth again outside and says to them: Behold, I bring him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.
So Jesus went forth outside, wearing the thorny wreath and the purple robe. And he says to them: Behold the man!
So when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him. Pilate says to them: Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I myself find no guilt in him.
The Jews answered him: We ourselves have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
So when Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,
and he went into the Praetorium again and says to Jesus: From where are you yourself? But Jesus did not give an answer to him.
So Pilate says to him: Do you not speak to me? Surely you know that I have authority to release you and I have authority to crucify you?
Jesus answered him: You were having no authority against me, unless it were given to you from above; because of this, the one who betrayed me to you has greater sin.
Out of this, Pilate was seeking to release him; but the Jews cried out, saying: If you shall release this man, you are not a dear one of Caesar. Everyone making himself a king speaks against the Caesar.
So Pilate, having heard these words, brought Jesus out and sat down upon the judgment seat at a place named the Stone Pavement, now in Hebrew Gabbatha.
Now it was the Day of Preparation of the Passover; the hour was about the sixth. And he says to the Jews: Behold your king!
Now they cried out, therefore: Away, crucify him! Pilate says to them: Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered: We have no king except Caesar.
So then he delivered him to them, that he might be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away;
and bearing his own cross, he went out to the place named of the Skull Place, which is named in Hebrew Golgotha,
where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side and on that side, now Jesus in between.
Then Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross. Now it was written: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
So many of the Jews read this title, for the place of the city where Jesus was crucified was near; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek.
So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate: Do not write, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written.
Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, a part to each soldier, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven throughout from the top all.
So they said to one another: Let us not tear it up, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be; that the Scripture might be fulfilled which is being spoken: They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot. So the soldiers indeed did these things.
But standing by the cross of Jesus had been his mother and the sister of his mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary the Magdalene.
So Jesus, when he had seen his mother and the disciple whom he was loving already standing by, says to his mother: Madam, behold your son.
Then he says to the disciple: Behold your mother. And from that very hour the disciple took her to his own.
After this, Jesus, knowing that now all things has been accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, says: I thirst.
So a vessel full of sour wine was set there; so when they had put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop stalk, they brought it to the mouth.
When then Jesus took the sour wine, he said: It has been finished. And when he had bowed the head, he yielded up the spirit.
So the Jews, since it was the Preparation, so that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath — for the day of that Sabbath was a high one — asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first indeed and of the other who had been crucified with him;
but when they had come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs,
but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
And the one having seen has borne witness, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is speaking truth, that you yourselves also may trust.
For these things took place so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: Not one bone of his will be broken.
And again another Scripture says: They will behold the One on whom they have pierced.
Then after these things, Joseph the one from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus — concealed however through the fear of the Jews — asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission. So he came and took away his body.
Now Nicodemus also came, the one who came to him by night at the first, bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound.
So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, even as the custom is among the Jews to prepare for burial.
Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet already laid.
So there, on account of the Preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus.
