When Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples beyond the winter stream of the Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he himself and his disciples entered.
Now Judas, who was delivering him up, also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered together there with his disciples.
So Judas, having procured the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
So Jesus, knowing all things that are coming upon him, went out also and speaks to them: Whom do you seek?
They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus says to them: I am he. Now Judas, who was delivering him up, had also been standing with them.
So when he said to them, I am he, they drew toward the back and fell to the ground.
So again he questioned them: Whom do you seek? And they said: Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus answered: I have told you that I am he; so if you seek me, allow these to go away;
so that the word might be fulfilled that he had spoken: Of those whom you have given me, I lost not one.
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear; now the name of the slave was Malchus.
So Jesus said to Peter: Put your sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I surely not drink it?
Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound him,
and they brought him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that same year.
Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it is profitable for one man to die for the people.
Now Simon Peter and the other disciple were following after Jesus. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.
But Peter had stood at the door outside; so the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
So the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter: Surely you yourself are also of the disciples of this man? He says: I am not.
Now the slaves and the officers had been standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves; now Peter also was with them, having stood and warming himself.
Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his teaching.
Jesus answered him: I myself have spoken openly to the world. I myself always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I spoke not anything.
Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look, they know what I myself said.
Now when he had said these things, one of the officers already standing by gave Jesus a blow with the palm, having said: Do you thus answer the high priest?
Jesus answered him: If I spoke evil, bear witness concerning the evil; but if rightly, why do you strike me?
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Now Simon Peter was already standing and warming himself; so they said to him: Surely you yourself are also of his disciples? So he denied and said: I am not.
One of the slaves of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says: Surely I myself saw you in the garden with him?
Then again Peter denied, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Then they are leading Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium; now it was early. And they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they might not be defiled but so that they might eat the Passover.
So Pilate went out to them and said: What accusation do you bring against this man?
They answered and said to him: Except this one were doing evil, then we would not have delivered him to you.
So Pilate said to them: Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law. So the Jews said to him: It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death;
so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he had spoken, signifying by what death he was about to die.
So Pilate entered again into the Praetorium and called Jesus and said to him: Are you yourself the King of the Jews?
Jesus answered him: Do you yourself say this of yourself, or did others say it to you concerning me?
Pilate answered: Surely I myself am not ever a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What did you do?
Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my attendants would then be fighting, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.
So Pilate said to him: Then are you yourself a king? Jesus answered: You yourself say that I myself am a king. For this I myself have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.
Pilate says to him: What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and says to them: I myself find no guilt in him.
But it is a custom with you that I might release one to you at the Passover; so do you wish that I might release to you the King of the Jews?
Then they all cried out again, saying: Not this one, but Barabbas! Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.
