Now a certain man was ailing, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister;
Now Mary was the one having anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and having wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You cherish was being sick."
Then having heard, Jesus said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
Now Jesus was loving Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
Therefore when He heard that he is sick, then indeed He remained in the place where He was two days.
Then after this He says to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again."
The disciples say to Him, "Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and again You are going there?"
Jesus answered, "Surely there are twelve hours in the day? If anyone shall walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world.
However if anyone shall walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
He said these things, and after this He says to them, "Our dear one Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go that I may awaken him."
Therefore the disciples said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well."
However Jesus had spoken of his death; however they thought that He speaks of the rest of sleep.
Therefore then Jesus said to them plainly, "Lazarus has died.
And I rejoice for your sake that I was not there, in order that you may trust; but let us go to him."
Therefore Thomas, who is named Didymus, said to the fellow disciples, "Let us go also, that we may die with Him."
Therefore having come, Jesus found him already four days having been in the tomb.
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
And many of the Jews now had come unto Martha and Mary, that they may console them concerning their brother.
Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met with Him; however Mary was sitting in the house.
Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not then be dead.
Nevertheless even now I know that as much as You may ask God, God will give You."
Jesus says to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha says to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; the one trusting in Me, even if he shall die, he will live,
And everyone who is living and trusting in Me certainly shall not die forever. Do you trust this?"
She says to Him, "Yes, Lord; I myself have believed that You yourself are the Anointed One, the Son of God, the One coming into the world."
And when she had said these things, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, having said, "The Teacher is come and He calls you."
Then she, when she heard, rose up quickly and was coming to Him.
Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met with Him.
Then the Jews who are being with her in the house and consoling her, when she had seen Mary that she rose up soon and went out, followed after her, when she had supposed that she is going to the tomb that she may weep there.
Therefore Mary, when she came to where Jesus was, when she had seen Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not then have died."
Therefore Jesus, when He saw her weeping and the Jews having come with her weeping, was deeply moved in the spirit and troubled Himself,
And He said, "Where have you laid him?" They say to Him, "Lord, come and see."
Jesus wept.
Therefore the Jews were saying, "Behold how He was loving him!"
However some of them said, "Surely this man who having opened the eyes of the blind was able to have caused that this one also not may have died?"
Therefore Jesus, again being deeply moved in Himself, comes to the tomb; now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
Jesus says, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the one who has deceased, says to Him, "Lord, already he stinks; for it is four days."
Jesus says to her, "Surely I said to you that if you shall trust you will see the glory of God?"
Therefore they took away the stone where the one who has died was laid. Now Jesus lifted His eyes upwards and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
And I myself knew that You always hear Me; but on account of the crowd which already standing around, I said it, that they may trust that You yourself sent Me."
And when he had said these things in a loud voice, He cried out, "Lazarus, come forth."
And the one who has died came forth, bound the feet and the hands with linen strips, and his face had bound about a cloth. Jesus says to them, "Unbind him and allow him to go."
Therefore many of the Jews, when he had come to Mary and having seen what things Jesus did, trusted in Him.
However some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did.
Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and were saying, "What are we to do? For this man does many signs!
If we shall let Him alone like this, all will trust in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and the nation."
However one certain of them, Caiaphas, being high priest on that same year, said to them, "You yourselves know no thing,
Nor do you consider that it is profitable for you that one man may die for the people, and not all the nation may perish."
Now this he said not from himself, but being high priest on that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
And not for the nation only but that also He may gather together into one the children of God those scattered.
Therefore from that very day they plotted that they may kill Him.
Therefore Jesus no longer was walking publicly among the Jews, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a city being named Ephraim, and there He stayed with His disciples.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the region before the Passover, so that they may purify themselves.
Therefore they were seeking Jesus and were saying among one another in the temple, already standing, "What does it seem to you, that He may certainly not come to the festival?"
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees also had given commands that if anyone shall know where He is, he shall show it, so that they may seize Him.
