In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not grasped it.
There came a man sent from God; the name to him was John.
He came as a witness, so that he might testify concerning the Light, so that all might trust through him.
He was not the Light, but came so that he might witness concerning the Light.
The true Light, who enlightens every man, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and the world did not know Him.
To His own He came, and His own did not receive Him.
However, as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God, to those trusting in his name,
who were born not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.
And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, a glory as of an only begotten from the Father, full of favor and truth.
John witnesses concerning Him and has cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'The One coming after me has come to be ahead of me, because He was before me.'"
For from his fullness, we ourselves have all received, and favor in place of favor.
For the law was given through Moses; the favor and the truth came through Jesus the Anointed One.
No one has ever yet seen God; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, that One has made Him known.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him, so that they might ask him, "Who are you yourself?"
And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I myself am not the Anointed One."
And they asked him, "What then? Are you yourself Elijah?" And he says, "I am not." "Are you yourself the prophet?" And he answered, "No."
Therefore they said to him, "Who are you? So that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I myself am a voice crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' even as Isaiah the prophet said."
And those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
And they asked him and said to him, "Why then do you immerse, if you yourself are not the Anointed One, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
John answered them, saying, "I myself immerse with water; but in your midst stands one whom you yourselves do not know,
He himself is the One coming after me, who has come to be ahead of me, whose sandal strap I myself am not worthy to untie."
These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was immersing.
On the next day John sees Jesus coming to him and says, "Behold the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world.
He it is concerning whom I myself said, 'After me comes a man, who has come to be ahead of me, because He was before me.'
And I myself did not know Him; but so that He might be revealed to Israel, for this reason I myself came immersing with water."
And John bore witness, saying, "I have beheld the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained upon Him."
And I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to immerse with water, that One said to me, 'The one on whom you may see the Spirit descending and abiding, this is the One who immerses with the Holy Spirit.'
And I myself have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.
On the next day John was standing again, and two of his disciples were with him.
And when he had looked at Jesus as He walked, he says, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
Then Jesus, having turned and beheld them following, says to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to Him, "Rabbi" — which, translated, means Teacher — "where are You staying?"
He says to them, "Come, and you will behold." So they went and saw where He abides, and they stayed with Him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard from John and followed Him.
He first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, "We have found the Messiah" — which, translated, is the Anointed One.
And he led him to Jesus. Now Jesus, having looked at him, said, "You yourself are Simon the son of John; you yourself will be called Cephas" — which means Peter.
On the next day He desired to go forth into Galilee, and He finds Philip, and Jesus says to him, "Follow Me."
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, from the city of Andrew and Peter.
Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, "We have found the One about whom Moses wrote in the Law, and also the prophets — Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good be out of Nazareth?" Philip says to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him and says concerning him, "Behold, truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit."
Nathanael says to Him, "From where do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered Him and says, "Rabbi, You yourself are the Son of God, You yourself are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you trust because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these."
And He says to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you all, from now on you will behold the heaven opened up and the messengers of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."
