The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying:
Stand in the gate of the house of Yahweh, and call out there this word, and say: Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah, you who come through these gates to bow down to Yahweh.
Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Make your ways and your deeds good, and I will make you dwell in this place.
Do not trust for yourselves in the words of falsehood, saying: The temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, they are the temple of Yahweh!
For if you truly make your ways and your deeds good, if you truly do justice between a man and his neighbor,
if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not pour out innocent blood in this place, and do not walk after other gods to your own hurt,
then I will make you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, from forever to forever.
Behold, you are trusting for yourselves in the words of falsehood, to no profit.
Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, swear to falsehood, make sacrifices smoke to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you have not known,
and you will come and stand before my face in this house, over which my name is called, and you will say, "We are delivered"—in order to do all these abominations?
Has this house, over which my name is called, become a cave of violent ones in your eyes? Also I—behold, I have seen it—the utterance of Yahweh.
For go now to my place that was in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell there at the first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.
And now, because you did all these works, the utterance of Yahweh, and I spoke to you, rising early and speaking, and you did not hear, and I called you, and you did not answer,
Then I will do to the house over which my name is called, the one you trust in, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, just as I did to Shiloh.
And I will throw you out from before my face, just as I threw out all your brothers, all the seed of Ephraim.
And you, do not pray on behalf of this people, and do not lift up a cry or prayer on behalf of them, and do not press upon me, for I am not listening to you.
Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of the skies, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, so as to provoke me to anger.
Is it me they are provoking to anger, the utterance of Yahweh? Is it not themselves, for the sake of the shame of their faces?
Therefore, this is what the Adonai Yahweh says: Look, my anger and my burning rage are being poured out on this place, on man, and on livestock, and on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.
This is what Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel says: Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat flesh!
For I did not speak with your fathers, and I did not command them, on the day I brought them out from the land of Egypt, concerning words of burnt offering and sacrifice.
But this is the word I commanded them, saying: Hear my voice, and I will be God to you, and you will be a people to me; and you will walk in all the way that I command you, so that it may go well for you.
And they did not listen and did not incline their ear, but walked in their counsels, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and they went backward and not forward.
From the day that your fathers came out from the land of Egypt until this day, I sent to you all my slaves the prophets, day after day, starting early and sending them.
But they did not listen to me, and did not incline their ear; they stiffened their necks, and did more evil than their fathers.
And you will speak to them all these words, but they will not listen to you; and you will call to them, but they will not answer you.
And you will say to them: This is the nation that did not listen to the voice of Yahweh its God, and did not take discipline; steadiness has perished and been cut off from their mouth.
Cut off your crown of hair and throw it away, and lift up a lamentation on the bare heights, for Yahweh has rejected and abandoned the generation of his fury.
For the children of Judah have done what is evil in my eyes, the utterance of Yahweh; they have put their detestable things in the house over which my name is called, to defile it.
And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come up on my heart.
Therefore, look, days are coming, the utterance of Yahweh, when it will not be said again, 'Topheth,' or 'the valley of Ben Hinnom,' but 'the valley of the slaughter'; and they will bury in Topheth for lack of room.
And the carcasses of this people will be food for the birds of the skies and for the livestock of the land, and there is no one to drive them off in terror.
And I will make cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the sound of the bridegroom and the sound of the bride, for the land will become a ruin.
