Jeremiah44

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews, those who dwell in the land of Egypt, those who dwell in Migdol and in Tahpanhes and in Memphis and in the land of Pathros, saying,

Like this says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah; and behold them, a ruin this day, and there is no inhabitant in them,

because of their evil that they did, provoking me to anger by going to make sacrifices smoke, to serve other gods whom they had not known, they and you and your fathers.

And I sent to you all my slaves the prophets, rising early and sending, saying, Please, do not do this word of abomination which I hate.

But they did not listen, and they did not stretch out their ear to turn back from their evil, so as not to make sacrifices smoke to other gods.

And my rage and my anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they became a ruin, a wasteland, as at this day.

And now, like this says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why are you doing great evil against your living beings, cutting off from yourselves man and woman, child and suckling, from the midst of Judah, so as not to leave for yourselves a remnant?

by provoking me to anger with the works of your hands, by making sacrifices smoke to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have come to sojourn, so as to cut off yourselves, and so as to become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the land?

Have you forgotten the evil deeds of your fathers, and the evil deeds of the kings of Judah, and the evil deeds of his wives, and your own evil deeds, and the evil deeds of your wives, which they did in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

They have not been crushed until this day, and they have not feared, and they have not walked in my instruction and in my statutes, which I set before your face and before the face of your fathers.

Therefore, like this says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am setting my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.

And I will take away the remnant of Judah who set their faces to go to the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they will all come to an end in the land of Egypt; they will fall by the sword and by famine; they will come to an end from the small to the great; by the sword and by famine they will die; and they will become an oath, a desolation, a curse, and a reproach.

And I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence.

And there will not be a refugee or a survivor for the remnant of Judah who came to sojourn there in the land of Egypt, and to return to the land of Judah, to which they are lifting up their being to return and dwell there; for they will not return, except refugees.

And all the men who knew that their wives were making sacrifices smoke to other gods, and all the women who were standing by—a great company—and all the people who dwell in the land of Egypt, in Pathros answered Jeremiah, saying,

As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we are not listening to you.

Rather, we will surely do every word that has gone out from our mouth: to make sacrifices smoke to the queen of the skies and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and we were satisfied with food, and we were well, and we saw no distress.

And from the time we ceased to make offerings smoke for the queen of the skies and to pour out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything, and by the sword and by the famine we have been consumed.

And when we were making offerings smoke to the queen of the skies and pouring out drink offerings to her, was it without our men that we made cakes for her to fashion her, and poured out drink offerings to her?

And Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and to the women and to all the people who answered him with a word, saying,

Was it not the incense that you made smoke in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land—Yahweh remembered them, and it came up upon his heart?

And Yahweh was no longer able to bear it, in the face of the evil of your deeds, in the face of the abominations that you did; and your land became a ruin and a desolation and a curse, with no one to dwell in it, as it is this day.

Because you made offerings smoke, and because you sinned against Yahweh and you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh, and you did not walk in his instruction and in his statutes and in his testimonies, therefore this evil has befallen you, as it is this day.

And Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt:

Like this Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel says, saying: You and your wives spoke with your mouth, and with your hands you fulfilled it, saying, Surely we will carry out our vows that we vowed, to make offerings smoke for the queen of the skies and to pour out drink offerings to her. Surely establish your vows, and surely carry out your vows.

Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah, those who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says Yahweh, that my name will not again be called in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, As the Adonai Yahweh lives.

Behold, I am keeping watch over them for evil and not for good; and every man of Judah who is in the land of Egypt will be consumed by the sword and by the famine until they come to an end.

And the escaped ones of the sword will return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, men few in number; and all the remnant of Judah who came to the land of Egypt to sojourn there will know whose word will stand, mine or theirs.

And this is the sign for you—the utterance of Yahweh—that I am visiting upon you in this place, so that you may know that my words will surely stand against you for evil.

Like this says Yahweh: Behold, I am about to give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his being, just as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, who sought his being.
