And it happened in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying:
Take a scroll of writing for yourself, and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, and until this day.
Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I am planning to do to them, so that each may turn back from his evil way, and I will forgive their guilt and their sin.
And Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh that he had spoken to him, on the scroll of writing.
And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying: I am shut in; I am not able to go into the house of Yahweh.
And you, you shall go in and read aloud from the scroll that you wrote from my mouth the words of Yahweh, in the ears of the people in the house of Yahweh on a day of fasting; and also in the ears of all Judah, those who come from their cities, you shall read them aloud.
Perhaps their plea will fall before the face of Yahweh, and they will turn back, each from his evil way; for great is the anger and the rage that Yahweh has spoken against this people.
And Baruch son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him, reading aloud from the scroll the words of Yahweh in the house of Yahweh.
And it happened in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the face of Yahweh: all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.
And Baruch read aloud from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh, in the hall of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the door of the new gate of the house of Yahweh, in the ears of all the people.
And Micaiah son of Gemariah son of Shaphan heard all the words of Yahweh from the scroll;
and he went down to the house of the king, to the hall of the scribe, and look, all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan son of Achbor, and Gemariah son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the officials.
And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read aloud from the scroll in the ears of the people.
And all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah son of Shelemiah son of Cushi to Baruch, saying: The scroll that you read aloud from in the ears of the people, take it in your hand and go. And Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and went to them.
And they said to him: Sit, please, and read it aloud in our ears. And Baruch read aloud in their ears.
And it happened, when they heard all the words, they trembled, one to another; and they said to Baruch: Surely we will tell the king all these words.
And they asked Baruch, saying: Tell us, please, how did you write all these words from his mouth?
And Baruch said to them: From his mouth he read aloud to me all these words, while I was writing on the scroll with ink.
And the officials said to Baruch: Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.
And they went to the king, into the court, after they had deposited the scroll in the hall of Elishama the scribe; and they told in the ears of the king all the words.
And the king sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll, and he took it from the hall of Elishama the scribe; and Jehudi read it aloud in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the officials who were standing beside the king.
And the king was dwelling in the winter house, in the ninth month, with the fire-pot burning before him.
And it happened, when Jehudi read aloud three doors or four, that he tore it with the scribe's razor and threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until the whole scroll was finished on the fire that was in the brazier.
And they were not in dread, and they did not tear their garments, the king and all his slaves who heard all these words.
And also Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah made entreaty to the king, that he not burn the scroll; but he did not listen to them.
And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but Yahweh hid them.
And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after the king burned the scroll and the words that Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremiah, saying:
Once more, take another scroll for yourself, and write on it all the first words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned.
And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say: Thus says Yahweh: You, you burned this scroll, saying, "Why did you write on it, saying, 'The king of Babylon will surely come and ruin this land and make man and beast cease from it?'"
Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one who sits on the throne of David; and his carcass shall be thrown out to the heat by day and to the frost by night.
And I will visit their guilt upon him, and upon his seed, and upon his slaves, and I will bring upon them, and upon the dwellers of Jerusalem, and to the men of Judah, all the disaster that I spoke against them; but they did not listen.
And Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah the scribe, and he wrote on it, from the mouth of Jeremiah, all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and besides, many words like them were added to them.
