¹The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the days of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying:

²Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak to them, and bring them to the house of Yahweh, to one of the halls, and water them wine.

³And I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons, and all the house of the Rechabites,

⁴And I brought them into the house of Yahweh, into the hall of the sons of Hanan, son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was beside the hall of the officials, which was above the hall of Maaseiah, son of Shallum, keeper of the threshold.

⁵And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them: Drink wine.

⁶And they said: We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying: You shall not drink wine, you and your sons, forever;

⁷and a house you shall not build, and seed you shall not sow, and a vineyard you shall not plant, and none will belong to you; for in tents you shall dwell all your days, so that you may live many days on the face of the ground where you are sojourning there.

⁸And we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters,

⁹and not to build houses to dwell in; and no vineyard, field, or seed belongs to us.

¹⁰And we dwelled in tents, and we listened and did according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

¹¹And it happened, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, that we said: Come, let us go into Jerusalem, away from the face of the army of the Chaldeans and from the face of the army of Aram. So we dwelled in Jerusalem.

¹²And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying:

¹³Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Go, and say to the men of Judah and to the dwellers of Jerusalem: Will you not take discipline, so as to listen to my words? The utterance of Yahweh.

¹⁴The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, have been kept; and they have not drunk to this day, for they obeyed the commandment of their father; but I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, and you have not listened to me.

¹⁵And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending, saying: Turn back, please, each from his evil way, and make your deeds good; and do not walk after other gods to serve them, and dwell on the ground that I gave to you and to your fathers. But you did not stretch out your ear, and you did not listen to me.

¹⁶For the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab have raised up the commandment of their father that he commanded them, but this people has not listened to me.

¹⁷Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Look, I am bringing to Judah and to all the dwellers of Jerusalem all the disaster that I spoke against them, because I spoke to them and they did not listen, and I called to them and they did not answer.

¹⁸And to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said: Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you listened to the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his commandments, and did according to all that he commanded you,

¹⁹Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab son of Rechab will never lack a man standing before my face all the days.
