Saying: If a man sends away his wife, and she goes from him and becomes another man's, will he return to her again? Would not that land be utterly defiled? And you have prostituted with many companions; yet return to me, the utterance of Yahweh.
Lift up your eyes to the bare heights and see: where have you not been lain with? At the roads you sat for them like an Arab in the wilderness. And you defiled the land with your prostitution and your evil.
And the showers were withheld, and the spring rain did not come; yet the forehead of a prostitute woman was yours, you refused to be ashamed.
Have you not, from now on, called to me, My father, you are the close friend of my youth?
Will he cherish it forever? Or will he keep it in perpetuity? Behold, you have spoken, and you have done the evil things, and you have prevailed.
Yahweh said to me in the days of King Josiah: Have you seen what Israel the faithless one has done? She goes about on every high mountain and under every leafy tree, and she has prostituted there.
And I said, after she has done all this, she will return to me; but she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
And I saw that, on account of all the causes for which faithless Israel committed adultery, I sent her away and gave her the document of her divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the prostitute, she also.
And it happened that, at the sound of her unfaithfulness, she defiled the land and committed adultery with the stone and the wood.
And even in all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in falsehood, the utterance of Yahweh.
And Yahweh said to me, Faithless Israel has made her being appear righteous beside treacherous Judah.
Go and call these words toward the north, and say, Return, faithless Israel, the utterance of Yahweh; I will not let my face fall on you in anger, for I am faithful, the utterance of Yahweh; I will not bear a grudge forever.
Only recognize your guilt, that you rebelled against Yahweh your God, and scattered your ways to foreigners under every leafy tree, and did not hear my voice, the utterance of Yahweh.
Return, wayward children, the utterance of Yahweh, for I have married you; and I will take you, one from a city and two from a clan, and I will bring you to Zion.
And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, and they will shepherd you with knowledge and by acting wisely.
And it will happen, when you multiply and are fruitful in the land in those days, the utterance of Yahweh, that they will not say again, The ark of the covenant of Yahweh; and it will not come up in anyone's heart, and they will not remember it, and they will not visit it, and it will not be made again.
At that time they will call Jerusalem the throne of Yahweh, and all the nations will be collected to it, to the name of Yahweh, to Jerusalem; and they will no longer walk after the stubbornness of their evil heart.
In those days the house of Judah will go with the house of Israel, and they will come together from a land of the north to the land that I gave as an inheritance to your fathers.
And I said, How I will set you among the children, and give you a desirable land, an inheritance of the beauty of the beauties of the nations! And I said, You will call me, My father, and you will not turn away from following me.
Surely, as a woman betrays her companion, so you have betrayed me, house of Israel, the utterance of Yahweh.
A sound is heard on the bare heights, the weeping of the pleas of the children of Israel; for they have perverted their way, they have forgotten Yahweh their God.
Return, wayward children, I will heal your faithlessness. Here we are, we have come to you, for you are Yahweh our God.
Truly, deception comes from the hills, the tumult of the mountains; truly, in Yahweh our God is the deliverance of Israel.
And the shameful thing has consumed the toil of our fathers from our youth: their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us; for we have sinned against Yahweh our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not heard the voice of Yahweh our God.
