Pashhur the son of Immer the priest, who was overseer and ruler in the house of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these words.
Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were at the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in the house of Yahweh.
It happened the next day that Pashhur brought out Jeremiah from the stocks. Jeremiah said to him: Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Terror from round about.
For thus says Yahweh: Behold, I am setting you as a terror to yourself and to all your friends; they will fall by the sword of their enemies while your eyes look on. And all Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take them into exile to Babylon and will strike them down with the sword.
I will give all the wealth of this city and all its produce and all its precious things, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them and take them and bring them to Babylon.
And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, will go into captivity; you will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you prophesied to them with falsehood.
You enticed me, Yahweh, and I was enticed; you took hold of me and prevailed. I have become an object of laughter all day; all of them mock me.
For as often as I speak, I cry out; I call: Violence and destruction! For the word of Yahweh has become to me a reproach and a derision all day.
If I say, I will not remember him, and I will not speak again in his name, then it will become in my heart like a fire burning, enclosed in my bones; I weary myself holding it in, and I cannot.
For I have heard the whispering of many: Terror from round about! Tell it, and let us tell of him! Every man of my wholeness is watching for my stumbling: Perhaps he will be enticed, and we will prevail against him and take our vengeance from him.
But Yahweh is with me like an awe-inspiring warrior; therefore my pursuers will stumble and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they have not acted wisely: a disgrace forever that will not be forgotten.
And O Yahweh of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the kidneys and the heart, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have uncovered my dispute.
Sing to Yahweh, praise Yahweh, for he has delivered the being of the needy from the hand of those who do evil.
Cursed be the day on which I was born; the day that my mother bore me, let it not be blessed.
Cursed be the man who brought news to my father, saying: A son, a male, has been born to you, making him rejoice indeed.
May that man be like the cities that Yahweh overturned and did not relent; may he hear a cry of distress in the morning and a shout of alarm at the time of noon.
Because he did not kill me in the womb, so that my mother would have been my grave and her womb pregnant forever.
Why then did I come forth from the womb, to see toil and sorrow, so that my days come to an end in shame?
