Then Jerubbaal, he is Gideon, and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside En-charod, and the camp of Midian was to him from the north, from the hill of the Moreh in the vale.
And Yahweh said to Gideon, The people who are with you are great, too great for me to set Midian in their hand, lest Israel go over me, over me, saying, My hand saved me.
And now call in the ear of the people, saying, Who is fearing and afraid, let him return from Gilead. And there will depart early from the mountain of the people twenty and two thousand, and ten thousand were left.
And Yahweh said to Gideon, The people are again great. Bring down with them to the waters, and I will refine them for you there. And it will be that of whom I will say to you, This one will go with you, he will go with you; and all of whom I will say to you, This one will not go with you, he will not go.
So he brought down the people to the waters. And Yahweh said to Gideon, All who will lap in his language from the waters as the dog laps, you will set him alone; and all who will crouch over his knee to drink.
And the number of those who lapped with their hand to their mouth was three hundred men, and all the what they rest of the people crouched over their knee to drink waters.
And Yahweh said to Gideon, By the three hundred men, those who lapped, I will save you and set Midian in your hand, and let all the people go, every man to his place.
So the people took provision in their hand and their rams, and all the men of Israel he sent out, every man to his tent, and the three hundred men he kept hold of; and the camp of Midian was to him from under, in the vale.
And it was in that night that Yahweh said to him, Rise, come down into the camp, for I have set it in your hand.
And if you are fearing to come down, come down, you and Purah your boy, to the camp.
And you will hear what they will speak, and after that your hands will be strong, and you will come down into the camp. So he and Purah his boy came down to the end of those that are armed who were in the camp.
And Midian and Amalek and all the children of the east had fallen in the vale like the locust for multitude, and to their camels there is no number, like the sand which is over the edge of the sea for multitude.
And Gideon came, a man was scoring a dream to his neighbor; and he said, I dreamed a dream, and a loaf of barley food was whirling into the camp of Midian, and it came to the tent and struck it, and it fell; and it turned it above, and the tent fell.
And his neighbor answered and said, This is none other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, the man of Israel. God has set Midian and all the camp in his hand.
And it happened, as Gideon heard the number of the dream and its destruction, that he bowed down; and he returned to the camp of Israel and said, Rise, for Yahweh has set the camp of Midian in your hand.
And he divided the three hundred men into three heads, and he set rams in the hand of them all, and empty pails, and torches in the middle of the pails.
And he said to them, You will see from me, and so you will do; when I came to the end of the camp, as I do, so you will do.
When I blow on the rams, I and all who are with me, you also blow on the trumpets round about all the camp, and you will say, For Yahweh and for Gideon!
So Gideon and a hundred men who were with him went to the end of the camp at the head of the middle watch; only surely they had raised up those who keep the pails; and they blew on the trumpets and scattered the pails which were in their hand.
And the three heads blew on the rams and broke down the pails, and they took hold of the torches in the in hand, and in their right hand the trumpets to blow; and they called, A sword for Yahweh and for Gideon!
And every man stood under him round about the camp, and all the camp ran; and they blew an alarm and they fled.
And the three hundred blew on the trumpets, and Yahweh put the sword of every man against his neighbor, and against all the camp; and the camp fled to Beth-shittah toward Zererah, to the edge of Abel-meholah, over Tabbath.
Israel was summoned, the man of Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and ran after Midian.
And Gideon sent messengers in all the mountain of Ephraim, saying, Come down to encounter Midian and capture the waters from them as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan. And all the men of Ephraim cried out and captured the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.
And they captured two officials of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the presses of Zeeb; and they ran after Midian, and the head of Oreb and Zeeb they brought to Gideon from the side of the Jordan.
