1Ephraim was summoned, the man of Zaphon passed over, and they said to Jephthah, You passed over to engage in battle in the children of Ammon and to us you did not call to go with you? Your house we will make a burn over you in the fire.
2Jephthah said to them, "I was a man of strife, I and my people, and the children of Ammon exceedingly; I cried to you, and you did not save me from their hand.
3I saw there was no deliverer, so I put my living being in my palm and passed over to the children of Ammon, and Yahweh set them in my hand. And to what came you up to me this day to fight against me?"
4Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, for Ephraim had said, "You Gilead are refugees of Ephraim, in the middle of Ephraim, in the middle of Manasseh."
5Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it was that when the refugees of Ephraim would say, "Let me pass over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephrathite?" And he said, "No."
6Then they said to him, "Say Shibboleth," and he said, "Sibboleth," and did not establish to speak so; then they caught him and slaughtered it at the fords of the Jordan, and there fell at that time from Ephraim forty and two thousand.
7Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite died and was interred in the city of Gilead.
8And after that, Ibzan from Beth-lechem judged Israel.
9There were to it thirty sons and thirty daughters; he sent the daughters outside and brought in thirty daughters from the outside to his sons; and he judged Israel seven years.
10And Ibzan died and was interred in Beth-lechem.
11And after him, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; he judged Israel ten years.
12And Elon the Zebulunite died and was interred in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13And after him, Abdon, the son of Hillel the Pirathonite, judged Israel.
14There were to it forty children and thirty children of the children, who rode over seventy foals; and he judged Israel eight years.
15And Abdon, the son of Hillel the Pirathonite, died and was interred in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mountain of the Amalekite.
