Judges1

It happened after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel inquired of Yahweh, saying: Who will come up for us against the Canaanite at the beginning to fight against him?

Yahweh said: Judah will come up; I have set the land in his hand.

Judah said to Shimon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Canaanite, and I also will go with you into your lot. So Shimon went with him.

Judah came up, and Yahweh set the Canaanite and the Perizzite in their hand, and they struck them in Bezek, ten thousand men.

They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, and fought against him, and they struck the Canaanite and the Perizzite.

Adoni-bezek fled, and they ran after him, and after that they caught him, and cut asunder the thumbs of his hands and his feet.

Adoni-bezek said: Seventy kings, the thumbs of their hands and their feet cut asunder, were gathered under my table; as I made, so God repaid to me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and captured it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and sent the city into the fire.

And after that the children of Judah came down to fight against the Canaanite that dwelled in the mountain and the South and the Shephelah.

Judah went to the Canaanite that dwells in Hebron — and the name of Hebron to faces was Kiriath — and struck Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

And from there he went to the dwellers of Debir — and the name of Debir to faces was Kiriath.

Caleb said: Who will strike Kiriath and capture it, to him I will set Achsah my daughter for a woman.

Othniel the son of Kenaz, the young brother of Caleb, captured it; and he gave to him Achsah his daughter for a woman.

It happened, in her bringing, that she urged him to inquire of her father a field; and she dismounted from over the donkey. And Caleb said to her: What is it to you?

She said to him: Give to me a blessing; you have set me the land of the South, so set to me the springs of the waters. And Caleb set to her the upper springs and the lower springs.

And the children of the Kenite, intermarried Moses, came up from the city of the cities with the children of Judah to the wilderness of Judah which is in the South of Arad; and they went and dwelled with the people.

Judah went with Shimon his brother, and they struck the Canaanite that dwelled in Zephath, and destroyed it; and he called the name of the city Hormah.

Judah captured Gaza and her boundary, and Ashkelon and her boundary, and Ekron and her boundary.

Yahweh was with Judah, and he occupied the mountain; but not to occupy the dwellers of the vale, for the chariots of iron were to them.

They set Hebron to Caleb, as Moses spoke; and he occupied from there the three children of the Anak.

And the children of Benjamin did not occupy the Jebusite that dwelled in Jerusalem; and the Jebusite dwelled with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

Joseph also, they too, came up against Beth-el; and Yahweh was with them.

Joseph scouted the house of Beth-el — and the name of the city to faces was Luz.

The keepers saw a man going forth from the city, and said to him: Show us the entrance of the city, and we will make loyal love with you.

And he showed them the entrance of the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but the man and all his family they sent away.

And the man went to the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called her name Luz; that is her name to this day.

And Manasseh did not occupy Beth-shean and her daughters, and Taanach and her daughters, and the dwellers of Dor and her daughters, and the dwellers of Ibleam and her daughters, and the dwellers of Megiddo and her daughters; and the Canaanite was determined to dwell in the land.

It happened, when Israel was strong, that he put the Canaanite to the forced labor, and surely did not occupy him.

And Ephraim did not occupy the Canaanite that dwells in Gezer; and the Canaanite dwelled in his midst in Gezer.

Zebulun did not occupy the dwellers of Kitron and the dwellers of Nahalal; and the Canaanite dwelled in his midst, and was to the forced labor.

Asher did not occupy the dwellers of Acco and the dwellers of Sidon, and Ahlab and Aczib and Helbah and Aphek and Rehob.

The Asherite dwelled in the midst of the Canaanite, the dwellers of the land; for he did not occupy it.

Naphtali did not occupy the dwellers of Beth-shemesh and the dwellers of Beth-anath; and he dwelled in the midst of the Canaanite, the dwellers of the land; and the dwellers of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were to them to the forced labor.

And the Amorite oppressed the children of Dan to the mountain; for he did not set him to come down to the vale.

And the Amorite was determined to dwell in the mountain of Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalabbin; but the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy, and they were to the forced labor.

And the boundary of the Amorite was from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from the Sela and above.
