It happened in the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem for war against it, but could not fight against it.
It was told to the house of David, saying, "Aram has settled upon Ephraim," and his heart shook, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest shake from the face of the wind.
Yahweh said to Isaiah, "Go out, please, to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, to the end of the trench of the upper pool, to the highway of the field of the washer.
And you shall say to him: Guard yourself and keep quiet; do not fear, and do not let your heart grow weak because of the two tail-ends of these smoking firebrands, in the burning anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah.
Because Aram has counseled evil against you, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, saying,
Let us go up against Judah and cause it sickening dread, and let us break into it for ourselves, and let us make the son of Tabeel king in the midst of it.
Thus says the Adonai Yahweh: It will not stand, and it will not come about.
For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within another sixty-five years, Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not trust, surely you will not be made firm.
Yahweh continued to speak to Ahaz, saying,
Ask a sign for yourself from Yahweh your God: make it deep to Sheol, or make it high above.
Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not test Yahweh."
He said, "Hear, please, house of David: Is it too little for you to weary men, that you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Look, the young woman is pregnant and will bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.
Curds and honey he will eat, when he knows to reject the evil and to choose the good.
For before the boy knows to reject the evil and to choose the good, the ground will be forsaken that you are feeling dread of before the face of its two kings.
Yahweh will bring upon you, and upon your people, and upon the house of your father, days that have not come since the day Ephraim turned aside from Judah: the king of Assyria.
It will happen in that day: Yahweh will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the channels of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
And they will come, and all of them will settle in the wadis of the precipices, and in the clefts of the crags, and on all the thornbushes, and at all the watering places.
In that day the Lord will shave, with a razor hired in the regions beyond the River, with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet, and it will also sweep away the beard.
It will happen in that day that a man will keep alive a heifer of the herd and two of the flock.
And it will be that from the abundance of milk produced he will eat curds; for everyone who remains in the midst of the land will eat curds and honey.
It will happen in that day: every place where there were a thousand vines, worth a thousand in silver, will become thorns and briers.
With arrows and with the bow one will come there, for all the land will be thorns and briers.
And all the hills that are hoed with the hoe, you will not come there for fear of thorns and briers; and it will become a place for letting oxen loose, and a trampling place for sheep.
