In those days Hezekiah became sick to the point of dying, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet came to him and said to him, "This is what Yahweh has said: Give orders to your household, for you are dying and you will not live."
And Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to Yahweh.
And he said, "I beg you, Yahweh, please remember how I walked about before your face in faithfulness and with a complete heart, and did what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept with great weeping.
And the word of Yahweh came to Isaiah, saying:
"Go, and say to Hezekiah, 'This is what Yahweh, God of David your father, said: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. Here I am, adding to your days fifteen years.
And from the palm of the king of Assyria I will deliver you and this city, and I will defend this city.'"
And this is the sign for you from Yahweh, that Yahweh will do this word which he has spoken:
"Here I am, turning back the shadow of the steps which went down on the steps of Ahaz with the sun, backward ten steps." And the sun turned back ten steps on the steps by which it had gone down.
A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he was sick and revived from his sickness:
I said: In the quiet of my days I must go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.
I said, "I will not see Yahweh, Yahweh, in the land of the living; I will not look on humankind again with those who dwell in cessation."
My dwelling has been pulled up and removed from me like the tent of my shepherd; like a weaver I have rolled up my life; he cuts me off from the loose threads; from day to night you finish me.
I kept myself level until morning; like a lion, so he breaks all my bones; from day to night you finish me.
Like a swallow, a crane, so I chirp; I moan like the dove; my eyes languish toward the height. O Lord, oppression is upon me; stand surety for me.
What shall I speak? He has said to me, and he himself has done it. I will walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my being.
O Lord, by these things people live, and in all of them is the life of my breath; so restore me to health and make me live.
Look, for wholeness it was bitter to me, bitter; and you loved my being out of the pit of destruction, for you threw all my sins behind your back.
For Sheol does not give you thanks, death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your stability.
The living, the living, he gives you thanks, as I do today; a father makes known to children your stability.
Yahweh is ready to save me, and we will play my stringed music all the days of our lives at the house of Yahweh.
Isaiah said, "Let them take a cake of pressed figs and rub it on the boil, so that he may live."
Hezekiah said, "What is the sign that I will go up to the house of Yahweh?"
