Ah, stubborn children, the utterance of Yahweh, who carry out counsel, but not from me, and who pour a libation, but not by my spirit, so as to heap up sin upon sin.
Those who are going down to Egypt, and have not consulted my mouth, to take refuge in the stronghold of Pharaoh and to seek refuge in the shadow of Egypt.
The stronghold of Pharaoh will become your shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your disgrace.
For his officials are in Zoan, and his messengers reach Hanes.
Everyone is ashamed of a people who do not profit them, who are not a help and not a profit, but a shame and also a reproach.
The oracle of the animals of the Negev: in a land of distress and anguish, of lioness and lion, from which come viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the shoulder of young donkeys and their treasures on the hump of camels, to a people who will not profit.
And Egypt, vapor and emptiness, will help; therefore I have called this one Rahab: they are a ceasing.
Now come, write it on a tablet with them, and on a scroll engrave it, so that it may be for the last day, for perpetuity, forever.
For it is a people of rebellion, lying children, children who were not willing to hear the instruction of Yahweh,
who have said to the seers, You are not to see, and to the beholders, You are not to behold for us what is straight; speak to us smooth things, behold illusions.
Turn aside from the way, bend away from the path, cause the holy one of Israel to cease from before our faces.
Therefore, thus says the holy one of Israel: because you have rejected this word and you trust in oppression and in what has turned aside, and you lean on it,
therefore this guilt will be to you like a breach falling, bulging in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.
He shatters it like the breaking of a potters' jar, crushed without sparing, and among its fragments no potsherd is found to snatch up fire from the hearth, or to bail water from a cistern.
For thus says the Adonai Yahweh, the holy one of Israel: in returning and rest you will be saved; in being quiet and in trust will be your strength; but you were not willing.
You said, No, but on horses we will flee; therefore you will flee. And on swift ones we will ride; therefore those who pursue you will prove swift.
One thousand flee from the face of the rebuke of one; from the face of the rebuke of five you will flee, until you are left like a mast on the head of the mountain, and like a banner on the hill.
Therefore Yahweh waits to show you favor, and therefore he rises up to have compassion on you. For Yahweh is a God of justice; blessed are all who wait for him.
For a people will dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you will surely not weep. He will surely show you favor at the sound of your crying out; when he hears, he will answer you.
And the Lord will give you bread of distress and water of oppression; and your teachers will not withdraw themselves any more, but your eyes will be seeing your teachers.
And your ears will hear a word from behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it, whenever you go to the right, and whenever you go to the left.
And you will make unclean the plating of your silver idols, and the sheathing of your gold cast images; you will scatter them like something unwell: Filth! you will say to it.
And he will give rain for your seed, which you sow in the ground, and the food of the produce of the ground will be rich and fat. In that day your livestock will graze in a broad pasture.
And the cattle and the young donkeys that work the ground will eat seasoned fodder, which is winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.
And on every high mountain and on every lifted-up hill there will be streams, channels of water, on the day of great slaughter, when towers fall.
And the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when Yahweh binds up the fracture of his people, and he heals the severe wound of his blow.
Look, the name of Yahweh is coming from a distance, his anger burning, and the heaviness of rising smoke; his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is like a consuming fire.
And his breath is like a torrent overflowing, that divides up to the neck, to shake the nations in a sieve of uselessness, and a halter leading astray is on the jaws of the peoples.
The song will be yours like the night when a festival is set apart, and gladness of heart, like one who walks with a flute, to go to the mountain of Yahweh, to the rock of Israel.
And Yahweh will cause the majesty of his voice to be heard, and will show the descent of his arm, in the raging of anger, and a flame of consuming fire, a driving storm, downpour, and stones of hail.
For at the voice of Yahweh Assyria will be shattered; with the rod he will strike.
And every passing of the appointed staff, which Yahweh lays on him, will be with tambourines and lyres; and in battles of brandishing he fights against them.
For Topheth has been arranged since former times; indeed it is made ready for the king; he has made it deep, he has made it wide, its pyre is fire and wood in abundance. The breath of Yahweh, like a torrent of sulfur, burns in it.
