Look, Yahweh is emptying the land and laying it waste; he twists its face and scatters its inhabitants.
And it will be: as the people, so the priest; as the slave, so his lord; as the female slave, so her mistress; as the buyer, so the seller; as the lender, so the borrower; as the creditor, so the one who has a creditor over him.
The land will be utterly emptied, utterly plundered; for Yahweh has spoken this word.
The land has mourned and withered; the world has languished and withered; the high ones of the people of the land have languished.
And the land has been polluted under its inhabitants, for they have passed beyond the instructions, overstepped the decree, and broken the covenant that lasts forever.
Therefore a curse has devoured the land, and those who dwell in it bear their guilt; therefore the dwellers of the land are scorched, and few of mankind are left.
The new wine has mourned, the vine has languished, all the glad of heart have groaned.
The joy of the tambourines has ceased, the uproar of the jubilant has stopped, the joy of the lyre has ceased.
With song they will not drink wine; strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.
The shapeless city is broken down; every house is shut up from entering.
An outcry over the wine in the streets; all gladness has turned to evening, the joy of the land has gone into exile.
Desolation is left in the city, and the gate is crushed into ruin.
For so it will be in the midst of the land, among the peoples: like the beating of an olive tree, like the gleanings when the grape harvest is finished.
They lift up their voice, they ring out with joy; in the majesty of Yahweh they cry aloud from the sea.
Therefore in the regions of light honor Yahweh, and in the coastlands of the sea honor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
From the wing of the land we have heard songs: Beauty to the righteous! But I said, I am wasting away, I am wasting away, woe to me! The treacherous have acted treacherously, and under a cloak the treacherous have acted treacherously.
Dread, pit, and bird-trap are upon you, you who dwell in the land.
And it will be that the one who flees from the sound of dread will fall into the pit, and the one who climbs up out of the middle of the pit will be caught in the bird-trap; for the windows from the height are opened, and the foundations of the land shake.
The land is utterly broken to pieces, the land is utterly split through, the land is utterly shaken.
The land staggers and staggers like a drunkard, and sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy on it, and it falls, and will not rise again.
And it will be in that day: Yahweh will visit upon the host of the height in the height, and upon the kings of the ground, upon the ground.
They will be gathered together as prisoners into a pit, and shut up in a dungeon; and after many days they will be visited.
And the moon will be abashed, and the sun ashamed; for Yahweh of hosts reigns on the mountain of Zion and in Jerusalem, and weightiness is before his elders.
