For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob and will choose again Israel, and will settle them on their own ground; the sojourner will join them and attach himself to the house of Jacob.
Peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will take them as an inheritance on the ground of Yahweh, as male servants and female servants; they will take captive their captors, and will rule over their oppressors.
It will be, on the day Yahweh gives you rest from your pain and your agitation and from the hard labor that was worked on you,
You will lift up this proverb against the king of Babylon and you will say: How the oppressor has ceased! The raging has ceased!
Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the rod of rulers.
He who struck peoples in wrath with a blow that did not turn aside, who ruled nations in anger with persecution that none restrained.
The whole land is at rest, undisturbed; they burst into a ringing cry.
Even the cypresses rejoice over you, the cedars of Lebanon: Since you lay down, no woodcutter comes up against us.
Sheol from beneath is agitated over you to meet your coming; it rouses the shades for you, all the lead goats of the land; it raises from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
All of them will answer and say to you: You too have been made weak as we are; you have become like us.
Your majesty has been brought down to Sheol, the din of your harps; under you maggots are spread out, and worms are your covering.
How you have fallen from the skies, morning-star, son of the dawn! You have been hewn down to the land, you who laid the nations low.
And you said in your heart: I will go up to the skies; above the stars of God I will lift my throne high, and I will dwell on the mountain of the appointed meeting, in the flanks of the north.
I will go up above the high places of the cloud; I will make myself like the Most High.
Yet to Sheol you will be brought down, to the flanks of the pit.
Those who see you will stare at you; they will consider you carefully: Is this the man who made the land quake, who made kingdoms shake?
who made the world like a wilderness, tore down its cities, and did not open the way home for his prisoners.
All the kings of the nations, all of them, lie down in weightiness, each in his own house.
But you have been thrown out from your tomb like a loathed branch, the clothing of the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a corpse trampled down.
You will not be joined with them in burial, because you ruined your land and slew your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be named forever.
Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons for the guilt of their fathers, so that they do not rise and take possession of the land and fill the face of the world with cities.
I will rise up against them, the utterance of Yahweh of hosts, and I will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, offspring and descendants, the utterance of Yahweh.
I will make it a possession for the porcupine and pools of water, and I will sweep it away with the broom of destruction, the utterance of Yahweh of hosts.
Yahweh of hosts has sworn, saying: Surely, as I planned, so it has happened; and as I advised, so it will stand.
to break Assyria in my land, and on my mountains to trample him; so that his yoke will be removed from them, and his burden will be removed from their shoulder.
This is the counsel that has been resolved over all the land, and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.
For Yahweh of hosts has resolved, and who can frustrate it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?
In the year that King Ahaz died, this burden came.
Do not rejoice, all of you, Philistia, that the rod of the one who struck you is broken; for from the root of the snake a viper will go forth, and its fruit will be a flying fiery serpent.
And the firstborn of the poor will graze, and the needy will lie down in security; but I will put your root to death by famine, and your remnant he will kill.
Wail, gate; cry out, city; melt away, all of you, Philistia! For from the north smoke is coming, and there is no one separate in his ranks.
And what will one answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and in it the afflicted of his people take refuge.
