And he commanded the one who was over his household, saying, Fill the sacks of the men with food, as much as they can carry, and put the silver of each man in the mouth of his sack.
And my goblet, the goblet of silver, put in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, along with the silver of his grain. And he did according to the word of Joseph that he had spoken.
The morning became light, and the men were sent off, they and their donkeys.
They had gone out of the city and had not gone far when Joseph said to the one who was over his household, Get up, chase after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you repaid evil in place of good?
Is this not what my lord drinks from it, and he surely divines by it? You have done evil in what you have done.
And he overtook them, and spoke these words to them.
And they said to him, Why does my lord speak words like these? Far be it from your slaves to do according to this word.
Look, the silver that we found in the mouth of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; so how would we steal from the house of your lord silver or gold?
Whoever among your slaves it is found with him, let him die, and also we will be slaves to my lord.
And he said, Even now, let it be as your words, so it is: the one it is found with whom it will be my slave, and you will be clear.
And they hurried, and each man brought down his sack to the land, and each man opened his sack.
And he searched, beginning with the oldest and finishing with the youngest; and the goblet was found in the sack of Benjamin.
And they tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey, and they went back to the city.
And Judah and his brothers came to the house of Joseph, and he was still there, and they fell before him to the land.
And Joseph said to them, What is this deed that you have done? Did you not know that a man like me surely divines?
And Judah said, What can we say to my lord? What can we speak, and how can we justify ourselves? God has found the guilt of your slaves. Here we are, slaves to my lord, both we and the one in whose hand the goblet was found.
And he said, Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose hand the goblet was found, he will be my slave; and you, go up in wholeness to your father.
And Judah drew near to him and said, Pardon me, my lord, please let your slave speak a word in the ears of my lord, and do not let your anger burn against your slave, for you are like Pharaoh.
My lord asked his slaves, saying, Do you have a father or a brother?
And we said to my lord, We have a father, old, and a child of old age, a young one; his brother died, and he alone was left to his mother, and his father loved him.
And you said to your slaves, Bring him down to me, so that I may set my eye on him.
And we said to my lord, The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves, his father will die.
And you said to your slaves, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.
And when we went up to your slave, my father, we told him the words of my lord.
And our father said, Go back, buy us a little food.
And we said, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, we will go down; for we cannot see the face of the man while our youngest brother is not with us.
And your slave, my father, said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons.
The one went out from me, and I said, Surely he has been torn to pieces; and I have not seen him until now.
And if you take this one also from my presence, and harm befalls him, you will bring my gray head down in misery to Sheol.
And now, when I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us, since his being is bound up with the boy's being,
And it will be, when he sees that the boy is not there, and he will die; and your servants will bring down the gray head of your servant our father in sorrow to Sheol.
For your servant stood surety for the boy with my father, saying, If I do not bring him to you, I will have incurred guilt toward my father all the days.
And now, please let your servant dwell in place of the boy, a servant to my lord, and let the boy go up with his brothers.
For how can I go up to my father when the boy is not with me? Otherwise I will see the misery that will find my father.
