And Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, Why do you look at one another?
And he said, Look, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy grain for us from there, that we may live and not die.
And ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.
But Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, Jacob did not send with his brothers, for he said, Lest harm befall him.
And the sons of Israel came to buy grain in the midst of those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
And Joseph, he was the ruler over the land, and he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Joseph came and bowed down to him, their faces to the land.
And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he disguised himself before them and spoke with them harshly. He said to them, From where have you come? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed about them, and he said to them, You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.
And they said to him, No, my lord! Your servants have come to buy food.
All of us are sons of one man. We are honest; we, your servants, have never been spies.
And he said to them, No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.
And they said, We, your servants, are twelve brothers, sons of one man in the land of Canaan. And look, the youngest is today with our father, and the one is no more.
And Joseph said to them, It is as I spoke to you, saying, You are spies.
By this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you will not go out from here unless your young brother comes here.
Send one of you to fetch your brother, and you, stay bound, so that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. And if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.
And he gathered them into confinement for three days.
And on the third day Joseph said to them, Do this and live: I fear God.
If you are honest, let your one brother be held bound in your guardhouse, and you go and bring grain for the hunger of your households.
And bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words will be confirmed and you will not die. And they did so.
And they said, each to his brother, Truly we are guilty concerning our brother: when we saw the distress of his being as he sought favor from us, and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.
And Reuben answered them: Did I not say to you, Do not sin against the boy? But you did not listen. And look, his blood too is being required.
And they did not know that Joseph was listening, for the interpreter was between them.
And he turned away from them and wept. Then he came back to them and spoke to them, and he took Shimon from among them and bound him before their eyes.
And Joseph commanded that they fill their vessels with grain, and return their silver, each man into his sack, and give them provisions for the road. And he did so for them.
And they lifted their grain onto their donkeys and went from there.
And at the lodging place one of them opened his sack to give fodder to his donkey, and he saw his silver, and look, it was in the mouth of his sack.
And he said to his brothers, My silver has been returned! And also, look, it is in my sack! Then their heart went out, and they trembled, each to his brother, saying, What is this that God has done to us?
And they came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and they told him all that had befallen them, saying:
The man, the lord of the land, spoke with us harshly, and made us out to be spies of the land.
And we said to him, We are honest; we have never been spies.
We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; the one is no more, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Canaan.
And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, By this I will know that you are honest: leave your one brother with me, and take it for the hunger of your households, and go.
And bring your youngest brother to me, and let me know that you are not spies, that you are honest. Then I will give your brother to you, and you will go about in the land.
And as they were emptying their sacks, look, each man's pouch of silver was in his sack! They saw their pouches of silver, they and their father, and they were afraid.
And Jacob, their father, said to them, You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, and Shimon is no more, and you would take Benjamin. All of it is a burden on me.
And Reuben said to his father, saying, You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him to you. Put him in my hand, and I will return him to you.
He said, My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If harm meets him on the road you travel, you will bring my gray head down in sorrow to Sheol.
