Genesis37

Jacob dwelled in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan.

These are the accounts of Jacob. Joseph, a son of seventeen years, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; he was a youth with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought their evil report to their father.

And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, for he was the son of his old age; and he made for him a garment of palms and soles.

His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and they could not speak to him in wholeness.

Joseph dreamed a dream and told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more.

He said to them, Please hear this dream that I dreamed.

And look, we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and look, my sheaf rose and also stood upright, and look, your sheaves circled round and bowed down to my sheaf.

His brothers said to him, Will you indeed reign over us, or will you indeed rule over us? And they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

He dreamed again another dream and recounted it to his brothers. He said, Look, I have dreamed a dream again, and look, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.

He recounted it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, What is this dream that you dreamed? Shall we indeed come, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down to you, down to the land?

And his brothers envied him, and his father kept the word.

His brothers went to shepherd the flock of their father at Shechem.

And Israel said to Joseph, Are your brothers not shepherding at Shechem? Go ahead, and I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here I am.

And he said to him, Go now, see the wholeness of your brothers and the wholeness of the flock, and bring me back word. So he sent him from the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

And a man found him, and look, he was wandering about in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What are you seeking?

And he said, I am seeking my brothers; please tell me where they are shepherding.

And the man said, They set out from here, for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.

And they saw him from afar, and before he came near to them, they plotted against him to put him to death.

And they said, each to his brother, Look, here comes this lord of dreams.

And now, come, let us kill him and throw him into one of the holes; and we will say, A wild creature has eaten him. And we will see what will become of his dreams.

And Reuben heard, and he snatched him from their hand; and he said, Let us not strike down his being.

And Reuben said to them, Do not shed blood; throw him into this hole that is in the wilderness, and do not stretch out a hand on him — so as to rescue him from their hand, to return him to his father.

And it happened, as Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his garment, the garment of palms and soles that was on him.

And they took him and threw him into the hole. And the hole was empty; there was no water in it.

And they sat down to eat food. And they lifted their eyes and saw, and look, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, and their camels were carrying spice, balm, and myrrh, going to take them down to Egypt.

And Judah said to his brothers, What profit is there if we kill our brother and cover his blood?

Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let our hand not be on him, for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brothers listened.

And Midianite men, traders, passed by; and they drew Joseph and brought him up from the hole, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty of silver; and they brought Joseph to Egypt.

And Reuben returned to the hole, and look, Joseph was not in the hole; and he tore his garments.

And he returned to his brothers and said, The boy is not there! And I, where am I to go?

And they took the garment of Joseph, and slaughtered a he-goat of the goats, and dipped the garment in the blood.

And they sent the garment of palms and soles, and brought it to their father, and said, This we found; recognize, please: is it the garment of your son or not?

And he recognized it and said, It is the garment of my son! A wild creature has eaten him; Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.

And Jacob tore his garments, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned over his son many days.

And all his sons and all his daughters rose to comfort him, and he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will come down to my son mourning, to sheol. And his father wept him.

And the Medanites sold him into Egypt, to Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh, the chief of the butchers.
