And Dinah went out, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, to look on the daughters of the land.
And Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, chief of the land, saw her; and he took her, and lay with her, and he humbled her.
And his being clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob; and he loved the girl; and he spoke to the heart of the girl.
And Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, Take this girl for me as a wife.
Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came in.
And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.
And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard; and the men were grieved, and it burned hot in them greatly, for he had done an outrage in Israel by lying with the daughter of Jacob; and such a thing is not done.
And Hamor spoke with them, saying, Shechem my son, his being is attached to your daughter; please give her to him as a wife.
Intermarry with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
And you will dwell with us; and the land will lie before your face; dwell, and go about in it, and take hold in it.
And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me, I will give.
Increase the bride price and gift upon me greatly, and I will give as you say to me; and give me the girl as a wife.
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
And they said to them, We cannot do this word, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin; for it is a reproach to us.
Only in this will we agree to you: if you become like us, every male of you being circumcised.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and take your daughters for ourselves, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
And if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughter and we will go.
And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Hamor.
And the youth did not delay to do the word, for he delighted in the daughter of Jacob; and he was honored more than all the house of his father.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
These men are at peace with us; let them dwell in the land and go about in it; and the land, look, is wide on every hand before their face. Their daughters we will take for ourselves as wives, and our daughters we will give to them.
Only in this will the men agree to us, to dwell with us and become one people: when every male of us is circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
Their livestock and their possessions and all their animals—will they not be ours? Only let us agree to them, and they will dwell with us.
And all those who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
And it happened on the third day, while they were in pain, that Shimon and Levi, two of Jacob's sons, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city while it felt secure, and killed every male.
And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from the house of Shechem, and went out.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
They took their flocks, their cattle and their donkeys, and what was in the city and what was in the field.
They took captive all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, and plundered everything that was in the house.
And Jacob said to Shimon and to Levi: You have troubled me, making me stink among those who dwell in the land, among the Canaanite and the Perizzite. I am few in number; they will gather against me and strike me, and I will be wiped out, I and my household.
And they said, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
